Parkin is not an early driller, definitely best suited too late September onwards in our opinion

Thank you. That is what I had picked up too. But could you explain why?

As I gather Parkin has very good standing ability and short, stiff straw which are the attributes we look for in an early drilled wheat, combined with early maturity. Was looking for a Grafton replacement.

This is for fertile silt soils following a range of break crops such as vining pea, potatoes, brassica veg, onions etc, where blackgrass is not an issue allowing sowing 14 September onwards. BYDV is my main concern but your comments have concerned me about Parkin such that I ought to explore your comments.

Many thanks and best wishes.

Grafton had a slow speed of development so if you put it in early then it didn't get too far ahead of itself by the time you go into the cold weather. Parkin, whilst it has stiff straw and early maturity it doesn't have Grafton's slow speed of development. Therefore is much better suited to go into the normal drilling window.

PS yes, it should have got on the Recommended list

Thank you. Mid September OK? Is that now regard as a 'normal drilling window' Lincolnshire.

That's interesting Barry. Thanks for the advice. It would seem that the breeders disagree with you. To quote directly from their guide -
"With good yield potential, KWS Parkin is suited to all regions of the UK, performing especially well in KWS trials throughout the Yorkshire/Humber region and in the before 25th September slot."
"Sowing date is quite flexible, performing well in early sown trials in the third week of September all the way through to the end of January. The highest yielding window is the earliest one, where KWS Parkin produces the second highest yields in trial, but based on limited data. This performance is due to strong tillering, medium development speed and strong early maturing straw."
To us late September would be early drilling anyway. We certainly wont rush to get it in. For us on the fertile silty loams after a veg or potatoes a short, stiff strawed but early variety like this could be really useful.
Also wanted to try some as after several years of breeders putting out later and later maturing varieties for that 1% extra yield (Revelation, Evolution etc.) it's so nice to see a high potential early variety out.
Sensibly priced seed too.

Then we will have to disagree :) the variety has not been in trials for that long but from what we have seen of it is definitely not the same speed of development as Grafton.

We need a range of varieties with different characteristics rather than varieties that are very similar but get on the recommended list because of an odd one percent better yield. I think the market will recognise that Parkin has a place does offer something different from other varieties.
