Indeed , so why are you . :scratchhead:

hoping that the weather is good in feb is a bigger gamble - I'm giving myself 2 chances, if what im doing now doesn't work I can go again in feb. If it wet or under snow in feb you don't have another chance ....... that's a bigger gamble IMO

stakes are low when your drilling seed out the heap with no till fuel use

Thinking the same here, just about dried up to have a go. Would probably get massacred by crows. For once I wish it would rain so the decision would be made for me. Hoping to get a spell at the end of Jan, sowing now is just guaranteeing 2 months of minimal growth and maximum potential pest damage.
3-4 weeks to emerge, stuff locally that has been drilled has come through or just coming through not being bothered by crows. It's dry enough here to go so I'm going, it has two chances.

Turning some more over today. Good old fashioned winter ploughing and let the weather work it. No point trying to drill this now. Hopefully it’ll look different in March .

Been doing the adding up and only once has December drilled wheat paid me better than April planted barley or oats here. Less concerned about the weather at sowing that the potential for a huge dollop of rain in January on frozen ground with barely emerged wheat on it.

That being said, I'd love to think I could get 100ac in between now and new year. Gear ready to go but only to keep spirits up.

I spent last weekend in the Stevenage area (family wedding!), so had a good look at an area from about 10 miles SW of Hitchin, through Baldock to just east of Buntingford. I was amazed at how free from waterlogging the fields were, and how much field work has been done, compared with Lincolnshire. Many fields ploughed, many fields of emerged wheat, and maize stubbles looking level and smooth with not a single wheel rut. Did not see any standing water. Driving around here you can always see a couple of fields on each side with standing water and/or serious rutting!

Rightly or wrongly I've been drilling this week on our most forgiving land. Used the Claydon as it's much quicker than plough/combi and I'm not flush with staff! Hoping to get some rolled today.
I think I would be more inclined to plant spring barley after January here. Got to plant some beans at some point too...

Out of interest what are you planning to drill... March obviously too late for the ww seed in the shed and spring wheat appears to be as rare as rocking horse poo... I'm looking at <10% ww (which may still fail), about 40% Spring beans :nailbiting: and 50% fallow :banghead: Well at least I wont have much of a tax bill in Jan 2021.... :wtf:

I’ve ordered spring barley with the proviso that I can have some w wheat instead, if it dries up feb/March .
Lucky that it’s only 24 acres plus a possible re drill on another 16 of winter barley. Already grow a big % of maize and having some beet this year. Already got OSR, Rye,wheat and barley in the ground by luck
