i've often thought that county showgrounds should host livestock markets at cost....they're there to help/promote agriculture and they have the facilities
Do you think being a red market has been Newark's downfall?Spotted you over the other side of the packed ring
Don't think so - Ted Ogden was there to talk about Farmer run Co-operative Markets (eg Skipton)
My take on the main points (other interpretations, I'm sure, will be available)
A detailed plan will now be put together and be brought to another meeting.
- Newark has a charter (like Louth) that says, if there is demand for a livestock market, it must have one. Judging by the attendance (cattle ring overflowing with farmers, dealers and buyers) there is a demand.
- The Gascoine family would like to cease to be involved, although are willing to remain until something else can be put in place.
- The site is council owned and it is thought they would be willing to transfer the lease.
- The object of the meeting was mainly to judge if there was enough interest in a co-op to warrant doing a business plan.
- IMHO, the general feeling was that nobody was keen to commit to anything until more details were available.
There's a long way to go.
Meanwhile, the market will carry on as normal. Mrs G assured us that funds will be available to ensure sellers get their money.
Best of luck to all involved, I for one want a green market in striking distance from here.
Finding 500 investors is a tough askTh
they need 1.5 million. So will need to sell quite a few!
Do you think being a red market has been Newark's downfall?
Especially with no guarantee of a return !Finding 500 investors is a tough ask
I don't think so - here's yesterday's AHDB figures for Newark and Selby (also a red market)..........Do you think being a red market has been Newark's downfall?
I 'get' that as you're a high health status pedigree breeder. It never bothered me going to a red market, as I wouldn’t dare risk taking all manner of disease home by buying stock in. If the auctioneer consistently didn’t get a good price, I’d sell elsewhere.
Especially with no guarantee of a return !

However for some of us 'mere mortals' the safety net of a green market (especially when trade is dropping) can save us getting shafted. With the current sheep trade red markets are no problem.
it would appear Selby has taken a fair bit of Newark’s trade over the last few years for whatever reasonI don't think so - here's yesterday's AHDB figures for Newark and Selby (also a red market)..........View attachment 855883
