Anyone heard about Newark Livestock Market!

H&H may buy them out and push south
Just been chatting about this with dad. A lot might depend on who owns the site. I know the Newark council own the car park, if the council own the buildings as well then there will be a big rent to pay and other auctioneers might not be comfortable with that arrangement.
Bakewell have stitched themselves up into a stupid rental agreement with the local council, so I wouldn't be surprised if other markets have done so as well.

No doubt we will learn more by morning, they need to lay the cards out on the table though and not keep a joker up their sleeve

Make of it what you will - 2018 accounts, 2017 looks worse though

Did anyone attend?
Spotted you over the other side of the packed ring ;)
So presumably Skipton are pulling Newark out of the soft and smelly?
Don't think so - Ted Ogden was there to talk about Farmer run Co-operative Markets (eg Skipton)
My take on the main points (other interpretations, I'm sure, will be available)
  • Newark has a charter (like Louth) that says, if there is demand for a livestock market, it must have one. Judging by the attendance (cattle ring overflowing with farmers, dealers and buyers) there is a demand.
  • The Gascoine family would like to cease to be involved, although are willing to remain until something else can be put in place.
  • The site is council owned and it is thought they would be willing to transfer the lease.
  • The object of the meeting was mainly to judge if there was enough interest in a co-op to warrant doing a business plan.
  • IMHO, the general feeling was that nobody was keen to commit to anything until more details were available.
A detailed plan will now be put together and be brought to another meeting.
There's a long way to go.
Meanwhile, the market will carry on as normal. Mrs G assured us that funds will be available to ensure sellers get their money.
Best of luck to all involved, I for one want a green market in striking distance from here.

I only put animals through sometimes, particularly at the pedigree sales. It would be a shame to lose it as it is next to the A1 for long distance travellers of which there are several Lincoln Red breeders from Cornwall to Aberdeen Nth Ireland to the Orkney's. But it is not worth £3,000 for very few animals!!

As I remember, arent Newark owned by a husband and wife team, both of an age when they might take things a bit easier and not have the stress?
Mr Gentry going suddenly, and also a good man in James Sealey, and the challenge of selling sheep when one man is buying a large proportion of them, just might have unsettled their confidence in the job?
Hence gauging the likely level of support in future.

What happened to James ?

How many shares at £3000 do they need to sell
