Apple Carplay is top of my list - hate driving anything without it, don't waste money on built-in nav and media, etc when we all have really good ones in our pocket - wirelessly connected ideal with dash and center console surfaces induction charging for devices - all cheap to do

That all costs money though doesn't it?

Interesting that it highlights a difference in target market even amongst farmers.

I haven't used the radio in the Landy in ten years. For a utility vehicle I really wouldn't be bothered if it had one or not. Stick your fancy Apple Carplay stuff for the leisure car and you can use headphones in the utility one - you're supposed to be working in it, not having a party. As for Sat-Nav - is your farm really so big that you don't know the way around it on your own?

No, I think it could save money? why car manufacturers fit media and nav when 99% of their customers already have it I don't know?

These cars won't be confined to your farm, people go further than that to buy machines, fetch parts, etc

ideally these things should be options, for users like you that don't use the radio why spec one at all ?

For a utility truck, I'd be happy with utility. I can see how you might want it, but it's not for me. Landy never more than 30 miles from home for me, and up here that's very few houses and businesses. I don't need or use the Sat Nav in the car unless I'm 100+ miles from home and would never dream of doing that in a utility truck.

A 4×4 van with enough room for me and my kit to get in out the rain 3.5tonne towing, 1 ton payload a diff that is open in low range, easy enough access fo me to service and repair it myself (emission control crap accepted(begrudgingly), a reliable service life of 20 years at least (fair wear and tear accepted) also don't want to feel as if i'm ruining the interior, driving the thing, after being soaked to my pants and up to my shins in sh!t all day

Double cab van / Utility station wagon.

Comfortably seats 4 or more but you can fold the seats down for extra payload.

Blacked out rear windows and 1 ton payload so you can claim all the VAT back

It will be shorter than a double cab pickup so will fit parking bays.

After you've done 200,000 miles run it on cherry with zero ( limited use )road tax.

The whole point of Grenadier is it’s supposed to be a no nonsense utility vehicle.

Stick to the basics, radio with either an aux cable or Bluetooth connection, standard din fitting so any 3rd party unit can be fitted.

Manual locking diffs with raised/remote breathers so they don’t suck in water when they cool

Manual low range selection

Decent steering articulation when fitted with bigger tyres

Doors that actually seal properly

Analogue heating controls, decent heater, decent airflow. air con an option

Decent sound proofing

Sealed inner tub so foot wells can be washed out

Trim levels varying from vinyl seats to cloth to leather

Manual handbrake, manual key start.

Decent sized recovery points at each corner of the vehicle for the inevitable getting stuck.

Underneath/chassis shouldn’t have awkward/blind angles where mud can get in but can’t be washed out and ends up rotting out the metal (like a Discovery 4)

Selectable 4x4 for fuel economy

Heated screen

Option of a diesel fired night heater

Not made of Aluminium

Option of Under body/tank protection

Basically make it a Land Rover without all the Land Rover faults. It baffles me that the same company that makes the Range Rover and Discovery made every version of the Defender worse than the previous one.

All I want is something that will pull 3.5 / 4 t , very basic with an alloy butt proper drawbar like a 'Trantor ' with a nice quiet cab,
55mph topspeedwill do. Manual gearbox fine.

And hopefully Min of 25 mpg.

Actually I might just get an iveco chasis cab with a very well built towbar or maybe even 5th wheel as well on the back , getting a bit impatient ......

That's just too much to ask: it's standard practice now that every new version of everything shall be worse than the previous one.

The user needs to be able to replace simple stuff himself - lights, for example.

The ends of the bumpers will get bashed - they need to be easily replaceable. My VW Transporter, 33 years old, has detachable ends which I can change easily and cheaply. I don't have to get the whole bumper changed at the garage for many hundreds of pounds.

The Discovery and Range Rover constantly evolved in to better and better vehicles.
Arguably the Range Rover and Discovery are at the top of the tree in there classes. Audi, VW, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota etc are all trying to beat the Green Oval. None of them have yet succeeded

Then you have the (old style) Defender. Quality lessened with every revision, chassis got thinner, body panels got thinner, build quality went progressively downhill, engines became the cheapest lump they could get away with sticking in all the while the price went up.

Every Land Rover that’s been here since pretty much the first TD5 that came home has been back to the dealers for various problems. Best ones we had were 200 and 300tdi versions.
