Interesting data... been a dramatic change in the rainfall since 2012.
1996-2011 avg. 520mm.
2012-2023 avg. 675mm
That's a big difference now you mention it. May also be when the Oregon Scientific packed up and went to a conventional rain gauge, doesn't seem that long ago but could have been 10 years ago...

Definitely been a wet one! Slightly surprised looking back that we actually had an extra 143mm in 2020 compared to 2019. I remember 19 been the wetter year but I suppose it was when it fell. Just hope the pattern doesn’t follow and we get two wet years after two average rainfall years.

2015- 847
2016- 834
2017- 859
2018- 698
2019- 1053
2020- 1196
2021- 964
2022- 843
2023- 1324

ps, 35mm and counting for 2024 🤦🏻‍♂️

Apologies if its a stupid question, but where could one find this information (accurately) for his specific locality if he doesn't have his own rain guage?

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-climate-averages if you’re lucky enough to be near a station the met office have a lot of data, interesting to look back at the long term trend to, max av temperature is 0.7 up here in Cumbria since the 60’s. You need to be near the station though, I’m 10 miles from the Carlisle one and they get 2/3s of the rain we get here.

av rainfall, 709ml
actual, 1127ml this year

dec at 182ml compared to 22ml 2022

but, weather patterns have changed, seems to be more heavy downpours, that just runoff, and result in flash flooding, compared to 'normal' rainfall, that drainage systems can cope with. How, do you address that problem ? Spend a fortune on drains that might seldom ever have to cope with volumes like this again.

as for the somerset levels, all you need to do, is try and explain, to a deaf EA, that if the rivers are dredged, you increase the volume of water they can hold, apparently, that is not true.

1738mm here on the western edge of the pennines in northern Cumbria. We average around 1400mm here. More telling was the fact that we’ve had 1137mm since the 1st of July which is pretty close to the 2022 total!
This is it, the average annual rainfall comparison does not show how much has been concentrated in the last 6 months, which is what has done the damage

Weather Underground, search for your location, and use the History tab e.g. :

If it then changes location, next to the location is a "change" dropdown and it will show you where their stations are. Pick one e.g. for Bridgwater and scroll down:

You might need to switch it to show the relevant year, pick a month, and maybe view in table mode, again scroll down:

If in table mode, scroll to the right for Precip Accum

I had to research tge rainfall at a farm yesterday- good records since the 80’s but I was looking at October-March for last 10 years. Average annual rainfall is 28” but winter varied between 10.9” and 23”. The last 4 years have been the wettest winters and winter 23 was already at 19” before we have seen January, February and March!

Sorry if this is elsewhere.

Over here in (historically) sunny Essex we have a long term average of 495 mm.

We had 662mm in 2021 making it a wet year, 432 in 2022 making it a dry year.

This year we have been 'lucky' to receive 808mm which is a cool 163% of normal.

How about some of you others, a friend on Exmoor has just texted 2000 mm but his stock know how to swim.
Down where we are we’ve had more rain in the first 3 days of January than we had in The whole of January last year!
