I see the s/mkts are gearing up for a price war v aldi/lidl, no doubt they will seek 'longer' paying terms, as part of that war, and, of course, they would love to see livestock markets close, price live, they have limited control, dead price, different story ! Lets hope, c19, has enabled livestock mkts, to chase down the debts, and have learn't to keep them down, for all our sakes !

Don’t most of the supermarkets claim to not buy out of live markets? In that case, how will they demand longer terms from the marts?

I’d have more confidence in the money coming from any of the big abattoirs that the supermarkets use/control, than many from the back streets of Wolverhampton, etc.

Often there’s a middle man between the slaughterhouse and the auction. At least one. Expendable springs to mind

He seems to be doing ok at dfam but it's hard to judge as we can't go and see the stock sold, it seems some regulars have drifted away and he's brought some in from down the country (If that's sustainable in the long term I don't know). I don't think the getting paid later has gone down well.
What effect will an extra 250 store cattle make to a Darlington sale?

yes, I expect they do quietly source through the marts when numbers are tight, but needing to have that middle man does mean that they have no way of demanding longer payment terms, as suggested.

Not everything can be blamed on the supermarkets.

have you noticed how the markets pander to all the dealers and flash big buyers who inevetably have big credit accounts dont pay untill there purchases are later sold etc etc ? yet if you get a fault or problem they brush you under the carpet .
Some markets and some auctioneers love getting the "big" buyers who don't pay for months it gives them a great trade for a short while then reality kicks in and they work out how much they are owed and stop them till they get squared up.
I would love to know whey they do it.
1 mart I go to has "invited" someone to come and it has really p!ssed off some regulars who would pay on the day, and at least 4 of us won't go now. But they have the "big" man and might see the money sometime.

if they can get away with, just packed in the UK, they can say whatever they like, if they buy deadweight out of an abattoir, or 'processed', it could have come from anywhere, and probably does.

I struggle to see how a livestock market can make such a big loss ?
It's not like they are buying and selling goods, and with the volume that goes through Melton and %commission charged, I can't see how someone can go wrong. What am I missing?

Markets might have very large turnovers but they work on very small margins, iro 3% and therefore there is a fine line between profit and loss.
Having said that there are market operators ( not naming any but you can guess some) who are happy to undermine there competition by offering reduced commission rates to tempt vendors from away and then offer extended credit terms to buyers to fill the ring. And Therein begins the spiral to tighter margins
I was once given some very good advice “ Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity”

What are Brightwells up to at Builth Wells Market. They dont seem to be making any effort to run it during the lock down.. Is Builth going the same way as they did with Rhayader?
Are they wanting everyone to travel to Hereford i wonder. Seems to be a thriving well praised market there.
