Are large livestock markets a problem?

This is the stupidity of livestock auctioneers, they have to be impartial and not have favourites or customers will walk to the next place where they get treated better.

It‘s a bit like tractor dealers who concentrate on the business of a few select farms missing out on huge amounts of business from customers who enquire but they can’t be bothered to reply.

Their loss.

Sedgemoor and Frome are the only survivors in this part of the world. Markets at. Winford opposite the Prince of Waterloo then down the road at Avon Livestock Centre, Keynsham, Highbridge, Bridgewater, Taunton, Yeovil, Farington Gurney and Chippenham, all markets I have known now gone.
Sure I've had cattle sent up from 2 or 3 of them, Chippenham for certain.

Not a fan of the drovers in Mold! Last time I went they were still selling sterks in the calf ring. And I was standing next to the pen before the ring. And the drover was tapping the animals on there back continuously. Looking for a reaction. So when a calf kicked he would leather the poor thing! What a d**k! And I don't like the fact that the guy in the ring bids on stock! Cant fault the auctioneers though. If you work in a market you should not be trying to be a hero and bid on stock.

What are your thoughts on the Auctioneers in Ruthin selling their own stock through the market, every single one other than the calf one.

Ruthin have their favourites. Everyone gets treated the same in Mold.
I've always found Ruthin to be straight down the line. Mold has a good name for being fair but I've never had much luck there personally. My father favours Oswestry and StAsaph. I suppose its just human nature, each market has their pros and cons and everyone has good and bad days. Sticking to the same market that attracts the right buyers for my stock type works for me at at the moment. We're lucky to have such healthy competition between the markets in our area.

I think it is important for livestock markets to remain but they need to be impartial and professional. Livestock markets are an important social and community pivot point for farmers without which the entire industry would be at a great loss. I can appreciate that general trends in the industry are against them in some ways but there has to be ways to counter that.

Not a fan to be honest! And there are workers there that are buying stock while working. Another thing I dont like is. I am a share holder. And I was never asked to vote on who was elected as new Director’s. They just pick who they want to be on the board of directors. They are all mates!

All the drovers at Cutcombe (Exmoor ) are farmers most of us have bid on and bought cattle and sheep on sale days, can't see anything wrong with it, I regularly sell sheep same days I'm working, earning twice!!
Work smarter not harder! (y)
Don't have a problem either if it's all transparent.
Do the auctioneers sell their own stock there?

The owners of Carmarthen mart (the local council) are asking for expressions of interest to run the mart,at least two local auctioneers have already expressed a interest in running the large mart.

Are nominations for replacing retiring directors not requested then sorted out at AGM?

Most markets rely on farmers or sons/ daughters of farmers to do the work in the market it's just what happens and they are the best for the job .
Why riles me is the way some of the workers are treated by other farmers/ buyers .
Just after foot and mouth I was so keen to see the markets get going again I went in and helped out for a few weeks till they could get their systems up and running again . One job I was asked to do was to keep the unloading bays clear, one vendor came in unloaded his lorry but refused to move it . Upon me asking him could he move it to the park thus leaving the loading bays clear his reply was ' people like me pay your wages so if I was you I would shut up "
I didn't waste my time telling him I was helping out for nothing !

There is a difference between working in the market and keeping your head down. And working and biding on stock while working. I was in Ruthin once and a worker of the market in a poloshirt with the logo of Ruthin Farmers Market on it was standing on the plank next to the auctioneer bidding!

But it ŵas transparent ... he may also have been buying for the market on behalf of others .
