Cage Wheels, are they really that bad?!

I well remember the Bettinson ones we had, on a Ford 4600 which weighed very little they spread the weight quite well, I'm not sure whether the wheelslip they caused helped to alleviate compaction or made it worse.
Best thing about them was you could take them to the field on top of the cultivator, put them on easily with the tractor up on a square of sleeper when you got there, all by yourself. Off again at night and chuck them up on the cultivator to go home.
Soon as I could sign cheques, I scrapped them and bought duals.

i bought a set of duals with my own money rather than use cage wheels
Difference was night and day

I’ve never had anything to do with them apart from load ours onto the scrap bin. Just can’t see the point of them they look like they won’t spread the weight as there surface is small so presume they are for grip on 2wd tractors

In the right conditions , they were very good at spreading the weight. Remember the weight is carried on the tyre ribs. Getting the tyre pressures right was the key. for these light little tractors they were fine, but hardly ideal on the road.
great for a whole range of jobs and I would dare to say far better than using a 300 HP JD Deere on the front as I saw rolling with a six metre set of rib rolls the other day, would not have been so bad but he had also got a set of weights at least a tonne on the front as well! Could have had a little David brown with a set of cages on the front and you would never have seen where the tractor travelled. I am certain you will see where that JD had been till after harvest!
