Isnt it an extremely peculiar situation? Those who sit on a pile a cash and who are responsible for doling it out are casting around for ideas to justify expenditure of that cash. Those in charge of the cash seem to know least about the job. The beauty of BPS was that it didn’t matter that those who doled it out didn’t know what to spend it on as that decision was made by the recipient, the expert on the ground.
If we still have to spend £3bn of taxpayers cash then why did we have to wreck that simple efficient way of “doling” it out? There will be waste and there will be shocking inefficiency now.

Previously, those that dole out the subsidy were governed by a loose set of rules decided in Brussels (with input from, but despite, UK politicians), which could be tailored slightly by each nation to suit.
Now, having ‘taken back control’, our various devolved governments are struggling to decide which they they really want UK ag to travel, and where/how to target that funding.

In the meantime, we are left in limbo.

A good start would be for DEFRA to employ a range of folk with genuine farming experience to act as internal advisers....

Save the money, just read TFF.

Because, given that it is public money, for honorable reasons, it now has to be presented as 'public good'. There's one way of ticking all the boxes - public, farmer, environment- they will get there in the end.

I imagine they were talking of 30% of the single payment scheme fund but hopefully I'm wrong.
It's a disgrace if that is so.

30% of the 3 Billion is for the SFI. The rest is for the other strands of ELMS.

Does anyone honestly think it will stay at £3 billion?

No.

It isn't really at £3Bn now. There are plenty of councils, the NT and other such groups who've had CS money from the "agricultural subsidy" pillar 2 pot for some years.

Under this new model that pot will grow from around 20% of the total (iirc) to 70% and DEFRA have already stated that non-farming organisations controlling land will have access under LR and LNR as well forestry schemes.

Seems like they just want rid of us ordinary farmers.

Oi! I would prefer you called it a 'nature friendly habitat space'.

You jest, but I can remember a visit after I signed up my last (about to expire) CS scheme, and some young woman came here and asked to see around the farm, and also wanted to go look at the old machinery and steel stock areas... Every farm has one....

I was told I should tidy it up, and I then pointed out that the massive bramble and elder areas was where a lot of birds and small mammals were living and breeding! She didn't understand :)

It’s the same this side of the border. Any ‘machinery’ left in fields attracts a penalty when you get a Glastir inspection of the fields where they are paying us to improve habitat.

In my case, there was no money coming my way for these areas, but I know I was expecting a visit and went round moving machinery off old setaside areas that were now something else.... Gawd knows what though, there have been so many schemes, so many years!!
