Essex contractor bankruptcy

see what happens to the contractors if the subsidy cheque stops coming especially those with the big fendts and lexion combines, i myself diversified by developing steadings but as far as farm shops etc go, too many about now and margins for those in many diversified sectors are dropping as more people jump into them

That is ridiculous. People who rely on the subsidy cheque to make an enterprise profitable and pay a contractor's bills are surely just losing money every year?

The bigger you get the harder you fall when it comes to farming.. unless you have inherited a farm virtually debt free or you have plenty of nearly free, home labour.

Many farmers are reliant on side businesses like ground works, general haulage etc or their partners earn a wage which pays the essential household bills or they couldn't continue farming.

Just isn't the money in farming to go out and buy 100k tractors so hearing about contractors going under is no surprise unfortunately.

As said, why do you need a sub payment to make a difference on whether you are profitable or not ?

Surely it's better to cost the job without relying on a sub

Depends where you are, farm shops are doing well in the affluent areas of England and Wales - combine it with a cafe/restaurant and the grey pound comes for lunch and then fills their shopping bags on the way out

Plenty of thriving farm shops in Yorkshire - some have even moved them into the town - in Harrogate for one

Then there are other farmers diversifying into .......

Ice cream making & parlours/cafes
B&B
Holiday lets
Cheese making
Farm Butchery
Kid's playing barns & cafes
Swimming pool parties & lessons
Farm Gyms and Leisure Centres
Farm Machinery selling
Farm Machinery repairs and fabrication
Farm Machinery manufacturing
Petting Farms & Cafes
Farm theatres and cinemas
Farm Activity centres
Fishing lakes and cafes
Farm caravan sites
Farm camping sites & holiday lodges
Music festivals
Horse 3 day events and equestrian
Vineyards
Farm light industrial units
Bulk storage facilities
Leisure Spa's
Golf Courses and Leisure Spa's

Build it and they will come !!

Plenty of diverse income streams not purely from arable or livestock farming

Non of which requires an EU subsidy - all profitable in their own right, Mr Boss Farmer

Diversity is the future of UK farming

I don't think the use of broken calculators really helps anyone. It is widely known that a lot of contractors can't possibly charge enough money for their services which only serves to bork their businesses and that of other people who are trying to genuinely make a living from providing the same service.

Ditto people sustaining otherwise routinely loss-making enterprises by using decoupled subsidy monies. That is absolute madness by anyone's measure. All you do is increase the supply of a product which serves to further bork the price for everyone.

the biggest problem apart from the price of the machinery which wouldn’t be such a problem is the short working windows that are available to return capital invested not this year but last year you could be baleing hay by 10am you work a good day starting at those times and multiply it by weeks rather then days there’s money to be made not sure to the answer but machines are to expensive for time frames available in this country

surely the only way to do it sustainably is to only contract with the kit you need for your own farm that way you are already needing a drill/muck spreader/combine etc, do a bit of work for others to help pay for the kit and then the cost per acre for doing your own is next to nothing

And if you believe that claptrap then you will believe anything......

I baled 1,000's of round bale, hay, straw and silage, welgar rp200, baler wasn't dear, and I used a jd1640, not a lot of money tied up, then upgraded to a class rolant, and a zetor crystal, modern balers would be much faster today, but how much money does a new system cost ? both baler and tractor were paid for, so no pressure, today's set up costs £10,000's, and contractors are reliant on farmers paying on time, and the machine working to full capacity, and in reality, all contractors rely on the above, for all their kit, and neither are reliable. The older I get, the more certain I am, that we have been talked into subsidising a machine manafacturers, they keep making, we keep spending, but our products prices are basically static, there's a massive industry behind farmers, if sales slow, they up the price, the trouble is, we can't, and, I fear, a day of reckoning will come, because, at the moment, every one is chasing us, for every penny we earn, to keep themselves going, we keep buying bigger kit, so have to look for more acres, stock, to spread the costs, it's a vicious circle, and that day of reckoning, is fast approaching. Young lad we use a bit, forced to sell most of his kit, the money didn't come in quick enough, and like he said, it's not because they won't, it's because they can't.

The price of machiney has gone mad, iv seen a few bits of kit on classifieds on here in machinery yards for nearly twice the price few weeks later. We are right up-to the hilt currently, lot of stores to go if clear tb test, and will be releived with SPF arrives, had a very large machinery dealer chase us yesterday for fairly small outstanding invoice, they said there bank was empty, no one paying.

The other week in this very section I suggested to someone they take a more basic model of tractor (same brand) for the jobs they had In mind as I couldn't see the point in spending extra to do the same work. I was quickly told off by someone else saying it was easy to justify the extra 20k and it was nothing.
Plenty of others on here spending more than they need on gear so there must be good money in it for some.

City folk buy a flashy BMW to impress the neighbours, rural folk buy a flashy Fendt to impress the neighbours.

There is going to be a time when reality will hit home and these 1% interest rates will end, it's going to be messy.

Yes they have more than one Industrial Estate in Pentre/ Sandycroft with a rumour Liddel or Aldi are going to have a unit on the original Floods PH Site next to several other mixed use units
Is that the main one where farmparts are ?
If it's Aldi they will have a lot of stores in the area, bigger store being built in Chester at the moment
