Not sure if there is an international comparison of how long it takes to earn the money to pur a roof over your head , in the UK house prices for similar properties vary hugely , food prices are a good bit higher in France from my observation
Well house prices are far lower in france , £150k gets you a house in the country with land , get naff all in the UK for that .

As for food I think the cost is the same roughly , UK has more choice imo .

As I said huge variation in house prices in the uk but yes generally higher, we have been to france many times, last year for 8 wks, food is definitely dearer even away from the tourist traps, not that that is wrong uk food is too cheap

Wife food found shopping in Paris shocking, at least double of here. Mountains expensive as well, certainly any ski resort.
I think we eat more seasonally here, but would agree there's not the huge range of food from around the world that you find in the uk.
Food is too cheap, needs to be fairer all through the farm to fork chain.
Cost of living is about the same in both countries , just spent differently.

Yes I've always said it takes as many hours of work to buy a similar standard of living in most developed countries, if living costs are high then wages tend to be too, Switzerland being a prime example, last year I had to a dozen trips at least to geneva airport for 6 am, I was shocked when driving back into france the huge queues going into Geneva from.france to work there, probably paid well to do that trip.

You can tick the box and not pay the audio visual licence. But if you have a TV you'll get fined, even if it's just for Sky you can get French TV channels through it.

They'll definitely get you, it's why it's done through your tax d' habitation, it's local so they'll wander out one day from the local sous prefecture/ Impot.
Oddly enough the hardest element of taxe d'ab is paying it ffs , it's either go to the finance office or send a cheque . asked them for bacs details and got quizical look.

I think every place in the world has a similar level.of grief, it's just when you move somewhere new it's a clean sheet, a new adventure and no baggage after a few years the sheet isnt as clean and the baggage starts building, my best mate moved to Ireland to leave a lot of agro behind here, thought from a few visits that cost of living and taxes were less, after he moved he just found that the Urish just tax in a different way, he was especially pee'd off when he was told he had to pay over three grand tax on the isuzu he imported and the 800 quid yearly road tax on it. I think a lot of people are pretty naive when they move country
Some are naive when they move, we see it quite a lot here, particularly from Brits who think that they are moving to somewhere like England with better weather, once they realise that is not the case they either adapt to the differences or return to England. Personally I have never once regretted the move or considered moving back, the over riding thought I had whenever we went back to visit family and friends is thank fu¢k we made the decision to emigrate 22 years ago.
Interestingly it is mainly the English that seem to be less able to adapt, the Scottish, Irish and Welsh appear to do it easier.

NZ has sone expensive properties, although it does depend on where you live, Auckland is less affordable that London. Food is also more expensive when compared to the UK, which is surprising really given that we can grow so much of it, it does have GST (VAT) attached which accounts for some of it, the quality in the UK is marginal though and trying to find a decent restaurant is not easy, why do you guys put up with mediocracy?

Not sure that is fair on uk good, the adage of you get what you pay for is true here, in general people have been educated that food should be cheap but large amounts , my thoughts are better quality but smaller amounts.

I agree, it is the Supermarkets that have driven the price so low that the quality now fits the price they are willing to pay, some NZ exporters no longer supply the UK market due to low returns, Asians (particularly Japanese and Chinese ) expect and demand high quality, they are also willing to pay for it to.
