If it’s a mixed farm ignore the bit about cleaning windows. Any farm where livestock is present and cleaning windows will be frowned upon!!

Ahem...

Don't go down a hill loaded much faster than you can go up it empty. Use the same gear both ways if it's twisty, next one up if it's straight and good visibility.
Don't rely on the brakes to stop you on hills or bends.
Always be thinking "What if..." What if there's a horse/cyclist/boy racer around the corner? What if the driver in front brakes sharply? You want to be sure that you can stop before you get an idiot under your wheels.
If you're keen to learn, most folk will be keen to teach you, and the more you learn, the easier your life gets.
Get to know your machine, check it over every morning and read the manual while you have your lunch or a spare 5 minutes. Some might take the pee but you'll more than likely learn something.
Don't forget the golden rule "Never leave your dinner bag!" Always have plenty of food and water with you. Harvest time can mean long, dry, hot days and you'll do better if you're not hungry or thirsty.
Above all, look after yourself. Don't dive into something without thinking about how it can hurt you, you are the softest thing on the farm and most of everything else can kill you without noticing. Not trying to scare you but machinery can, and does kill and maim people every year. Don't become a statistic!

If you have cb’s or two ways in the tractors, and really want to pee your new boss off, turn the volume right down and then forget to turn it back up again. When you see the farm truck hurtling towards you at 120mph, it’s probably because no one can get hold of you.

Firstly you are 16, we assume you have passed a test otherwise zero road work not even crossing. Lastly take care, great care never walk under tipped trailers, remember everything out there is looking to hurt you, dont mean to be negative, have fun , join in , do not sit in the cab on the phone! Unless you are told to.
Dont forget the pranks, many old boys will try and pull tricks on the youngest, dont be offended it is just a right of passage, they had to put up with.
I was going to mention this, some bigger outfits can be a hard place to work. Don't be clever but don't take to much crap. As Baz Luhrmann said 'when you work out how, tell me'
Have fun, and to the older know it all's. You were 16 once, don't just stand and watch the lad struggle or even more deride his lack of knowledge or experience. give them a bit of a hand and advice. This is one of my biggest pet hates.

Don't put it in low multipower going down hill. Ooops, I just woke up in 1973....nurse! )

Not just me then

As said, concentrate at all times, keep the fluids up, enjoy it. And be grateful you're not starting out 30 yrs ago, when the first job of the day for the pup was to be shoved up the arse end of the combine to find grease nipples in the pitch black ripping your jeans on the straw walkers in the process :poop::LOL:.

Keep your phone in your pocket if your out of the cab and something happens it's no good of its in the cab. Keep a good water supply and take your time and you will be fine.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
