Insuring Used Discovery- Are the NFU having a laugh?

Try an independent broker, let them do the running round. I've had the broker quote less than the company and still be getting their commission as well.

NFU wanted £800 for her IX35 just her and husband both over 35 years old, less than £400 from Direct Line or AA. and I think AA are only acting as brokers. On her behalf I rang and complained as it had been just over £300 for her Polo, couldn't care less attitude 'that's what the underwriter has said, nothing we can do about it'.

And yet they are only wanting £400 for wife and myself on a Tiguan.

Many years ago when renewing I told the local NFU man I was looking elsewhere, he suddenly appeared with a very large loyalty discount, don't know if that would have been available if I hadn't said anything.

We left the NFU getting on for 10 years ago to an insurance broker.
Saved 40% on our annual bill straight away!

Just out of interest…. In that time, how many claims have you made? And where they settled quickly and without hassle?

I‘m curious because I’ve always insured farm through NFU for over 40 years and have often pondered the value of moving.
Be Sod’s law that they’d demutualise as soon as we did though

NFU are good for 'non standard' car insurance, but very expensive otherwise. Tried to add 17 yo daughter (learner) through several online insurance companies, no one wanted to know and came back with ridiculous 4 figure quotes. NFU were the only ones who gave a sensible (I thought) £400 additional premium. Once daughter passed test and had her own policy (Sheilas wheels), NFU were over double what online companies wanted for standard owner driver / spouse comp cover.

We're with mutual 3yrs now, still cheaper than previous broker.
Quoting against them at moment for January renewal.
We are certainly getting more, and more appropriate cover with Mutual, than from broker previously.

Going back a few years my Disco 2 was insured with NFU Mutual, a bit more than some other companies, but we're only talking £30-£40. On renewal I was asked if I wanted farm cover ? I said yes, then regretted it as they would be bound to increase my premium, but got £30 knocked off.

I don’t understand, are you not asking for quotes equivalent to what you have with the Nfu?

Thanks for all the replies.

still got some ringing round to do but added it to our private Admiral policy until the renewal at the end of Jan for a little over £1/day with named drivers.
Used to be with admiral multi car they were good for a lot of years, you should try direct line I saved a fair bit at the time when I swapped, at each renewal I ring them and ask if they can do owt, they nocked loads off this year and the renewal was hardly anymore than last year!

Interesting, My daughter (17) not passed test yet, has a nearly new fiesta in her name, she has it insured with both of us parents as named drivers.. insurance cost.... £324 fully comp... yes £324... its not valid for her when she passes, but has now amassed a 1 year NCD

Odd thing was if wife insured it and had the car in her name with some old unused NCD it would have been about £50 more with all the same drivers???

We've had the odd claim, sorted no hassle., and very quickly usually. I think it is a myth that non NFU Mutual insurers do not pay up and the Mutual does.

Had 2 minor ish claims with brokers both sorted no issues, they also chased an uninsured boundary claim where the Nfu refused to,

My experience is that brokers have provided a better service than the Nfu, maybe 20 years ago they were ok but times have moved on…I could share more pm me if you interested

Plus there bell ends and don’t represent British farmers anymore…

Many people complain at the NFU insurance costs but I have just looked at our renewal and compared it using a well known insurance broker
The result was that the NFU was about 5% cheaper so I have stuck with them.
This was for 3 cars, having business cover massively increases costs
