Planet or Laureate SB?

ive used PLANET for the last few years and i think i want a change away from it
if you can get the fungicides on on time it will yield as good as anything else, but its very very prone to brackling

no experience with LAURETE

I tried a bag of planet this year and was rather disappointed with it if fact I didnt bother saving it for seed next year. I haven't got any experience of lauriet I'm afraid.

My planet yielded very well for the year at around the 3 ton mark , but I had to scrape it off the floor . That could’ve been the3.5 week weir after roundup or the weather though ,not variety

Both good but planet is preferred by malsters 1.85, laureate is more of a 1.65 if you can do it.
They are both way better than propino which turns to dust within a couple of days.
Our best ever spring barley yield across a block of 50ha was 9.3t/ha of laureate last year.
I think overall our planet and laureate averaged about 8.6t/ha last year, our propino blocks were 6.2.

We have grown Planet for the last 4 or so years and each year it's produced a good yield and a malting premium of some sort so we'll almost certainly stick with it.
Laureate is an excellent variety from what I hear but as others have said apparently the maltsters are not so keen on it, preferring Planet (or Propino) Someone also told me that it's more difficult to get sub 1.85N with Laureate than Planet around here too. Don't know how true that is though.
Our neighbour has some Laureate and it did well again this year but he only grows it for feed.

No experience of Planet.
Been 100% Laureate for past 4 harvest. Averaged 2.9t/acre over that time with 2018 being only time under 3t.
Always made low N malting other than one load last year that was rejected for poor germination. Later found out the plenum sensor on my dryer had gone kaput.
Some find it bad for skinning although I’ve never had any issues with that despite often being a week or two over ripe when harvested. Maybe a regional thing?

Still got 80 ha of Laureate out there. Ears still hanging on, but straw leaning, looks grubby though.
Grew it last year but threw screenings, FSS this year all grew, but late drilled mid-April. Fingers crossed.

I’ve grown both. Planet is brewing only at 1.85 N. Laureate is more versatile depending on the N content. Has a smaller brewing market here than Planet. Laureate is later maturing and taller.

Brackling is the main reason I changed from Propino to Planet 4 years ago, and I’ve found it far better.

Not looking great this year, but is anything?

I’ve found planet much better than propino for brackling.I think all the modern varieties need straw stiffeners much more than older ones, did mine with modus when it was still in drought and it felt wrong, probably the best decision I made this summer, was still standing last week when it was cut.
