Police appeal for information after goshawk killed near Goathland, North York Moors

In Germany, nuisance goshawks can be trapped under licence and given to falconers for a nominal sum who often release them at the end of the season.

It seems to me that that suits all parties as the mortality in wild raptors is highest in their first season. It removes a bird that is damaging property. Helping conservation as the bird can be released later when it has learnt to hunt and the game shooting season has ended. Oh, and it puts a few quid in the pocket of the gamekeeper who now has a motive for protecting goshawks.

Quad bike theft, well we can’t stop that.
Fly tipping, nope.
Illegal raves. We get a bit a frightened and can’t stop that either. I mean how hard is it to turn a sound system off FFS?
But somebody shoots an animal and we will be all over it.
We know what take priority for the police in the countryside and it certainly ain’t the human residents who pay their wages.

Don’t understand why someone would do that, chances of getting caught must be seriously high with all the saboteurs and other interested parties out there.

I had the wildlife crime officer round here a few yr ago investigating a dead buzzard that had been shot. Answered all the questions, it was nothing to do with me, I don’t have guns but it was “found“ in our field.

After the questions I asked where it was found exactly and the officer said that someone out on their push bike had found it........at 6am........on a Sunday morning.........in the middle of a 12ac standing crop of barley.............they happened across it when they followed a butterfly they wanted to get a photo of into the crop.......immediately noticed it had been shot and reported it. It was rushed to sruc vet dept and found to contain lead shot. She had a photo and the thing must’ve been dead for a fortnight.

seriously?!

At the time there was a syndicate shooting in the woods who weren’t popular with the dog walkers (put up signs about shooting and snaring dogs off the lead 🙄).

Think someone was trying to get them in trouble, and I wouldnt be surprised if this tactic was widely used, whats a couple of dead buzzards if there can be some good anti-game sports propaganda gotten?

That’s some high quality filming there.

How many times does a story about a missing bird make national headlines and how many missing kids make the headlines? There’s a very good and efficient PR machine at work.

How many times does the story about it subsequently turning up make the headlines? An Osprey from here did, they found it 4yrs after it disappeared, on a beach in Senegal. Alive.

I’ve no problem with these big birds, but we don’t keep stock nor do we shoot and I’ve always been surprised that this sort of behaviour still went on, but the events I described above made me pretty sceptical about stories like this.

Also needs to be independent monitoring of the data from the satellite tags. given its political potential, to have it owned privately and selectively released to fit an agenda isn’t right.
