Rotavirus

So this year we have been using rotavac vaccine again in a bid to prevent Rotavirus. 150 heifers born without a problem and now it's hit 15 four week old calves. It's early days but I'm expecting a major out break. All calves have been fed vaccinated colostrum within 3 hours of birth. Vet thinks there could be just to much challenge from the environment as older calves were in the shed until recently.

Getting on absolutely fantastic with the rotavec vaccine. Started it in January and it has been the difference with our calve rearing this year. However when the young calves get shifted amongst older calves at 6/7 weeks some of them are taking coccidiosis. Is there a dose to prevent coccidiosis? Can be a bugger if not caught early

Have you vaccinated this year ? We feel that rotavirus has been more prevalent in the last 12 mnths here and we have vaccinated, we wonder if the vaccine is not as effective as previously or a different strain is about, nothing too serious just the odd niggle.

Yes we have vaccinated and like last time I used it it doesn't seem to work.

2 more scouring today. None get seriously ill. Infact I'm sure most would certainly get better if I did nothing but I'm annoyed as the vaccine is expensive. I don't think I can do much more about it so guess I will just have to live with it.

We Vecoxan calves at 3 weeks of age ,stopped all coccy problems here. Lim beef cows. Also have Rotaveced for years. Would not stop either as it's cheaper to prevent than cure and so much less work.

Started using Rotavec here a few years ago in response to a serious out break of Ecoli (K99?) scours, worked wonders .so carried on ever since .We run a closed dairy herd.

Vaccinate all heifers and just even numbered cows, and pool colostrum and continue feeding this for as long as possible , using it for the youngest calves if in short supply ,and always keep some “vaccinated colostrum“ to one side for bagging new born calves.

For us I feel that the continued feeding of pooled colostrum is a big part of the story for Rotavirus, while the bagging in the first few hours was the answer to Ecloi

Used 6 sachets of electrolyte for 200 calves last year, no scour losses so something is working.

No sure what feeding pooled milk is going to do for Johnes but we are working on that as well.

To be fair I haven't seen any scour in the calves until a couple of weeks old so maybe the immunity is wearing off after a few days. I think block calving might help because the virus couldn't survive in the sheds for more than a few weeks without a host

When a calf scours, what do you guys give the calf other than electrolytes?

I know there is no injection for crypto but what for Rota, ecoli etc.

What electrolytes do you use? I stick to life aids but some people brag about that Gold stuff from Volac but it’s a shocking price.

Metacam. I just use the Mole Valley electrolyte which I know bovine doesn't think much to, but we rarely get scour and it clears up within 2-3 days, had a few with it this year but none were very bad cases.

Have a calf with now . Any opinions on remedies. Been using s 60 mil syringe product , twice a day but still not better .
Anti inflammatory ie metacam and fluids 2 or 3 times a day, we will keep feeding milk to keep nourishment levels up but maybe at 50% of usual levels.
Some research suggests norodine injection helps with fighting the problem.
Have you had the muck tested and do you use rota vac on the pre calving cows ?
