After losing the 1945 general election, he must of thought what an ungrateful nation. The theme obviously continues to this day. :(

Bye, bye Churchie ...

Thinking about demolishing Ringwood Church (it actually was rebuilt in 1855, but for the sake of discussion we'll go back to its roots in slavery), I would suggest we don't really knock it down because we rather like it, it is historic and it is a useful and attractive centrepiece to the town. We therefore put it in a different box to a statue. Similarly the Colston Hall, if it was knocked down we wouldn't see Nanci Griffith, but a statue is disposable.
Every day, we use technology that is directly rooted in the worst forms of slavery and genocide- our space programme, satellite tv and communications are very largely based on the human suffering of those who built the first stages of it, but because we find it useful, we don't notice. And this happened within the lifetrimes of those still with us, with the main man appearing on my TV set when I was a kid explaining how he put man on the moon,.

Don't know if you saw a news item but there is a curator of a museum who has been advising BLM activists of certain household chemicals that one can buy which will almost certainly permanently disfigure any statue

and here is Madeline Odent (American for a piece of useless information) ............ set of choppers on her

LONDON (Reuters) - A local authority in southern England said it would remove a statue of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the worldwide scouting movement, the latest memorial to be taken down in the wake of anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd.

The demonstrations sweeping across the United States and Europe following the death of Floyd in Minneapolis have reignited a debate about monuments to those involved in Britain’s imperialist past.

Poole council said on Thursday the statue of Baden-Powell, a British Boer War hero, would now be moved from its location on the quayside of the seaside town where it has been for just over a decade to safe storage while there were discussions with local communities about its future....

...While Baden-Powell, who in 2007 was voted the 13th most influential person in the United Kingdom in the 20th century, was hailed as far-sighted for setting up the scouts, critics said he held racist views and was a supporter of Adolf Hitler and fascism....
Don't get too wound up about this one. The leader of Poole council was on R4 last night. She has kids that are scouts and is very pro BP. The removal is a precaution as the statue was on a hitlist. She is very keen to have it back in its rightful, or at least a safe, place.

Apparently Baden Powell was on a Nazi blacklist and would have been arrested and possibly executed if they had successfully invaded, so it sounds like he ended up on the right side of history.

Thinking about this a bit more, I have spent my whole life going to air shows, museums and so on, where there is a huge array of Nazi weaponry painted up in full regalia. At airshows, the Me109 was always a star turn. Should these also be scrapped and consigned to the dustbin? They are blatent symbols of evil, yet I would suggest we keep them flying and on show to serve as a reminder of the darker side of history although they presumably are also worshipped by neo-Nazis.
Again I think we keep them because, well they're different, they are interesting and valuable machines, they demonstrate technology, etc, etc. and all sorts of justifications. They are far more related to evil than a fanciful statue.

By your reasoning maybe we should erect statues of Jimmy Saville so future generations are condemned to repeat his actions?

Sounds like a great idea, maybe announce your proposals on your local Facebook page and see how the locals react? Just a little tip, please turn off the comments on your FB post, as it will attract alot of attention which may prevent you from carrying out your day to day agricultural activities.
How do you work that warped view from the statement
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

It is quite the opposite, by trying to rewrite history and whitewash over the inconvenient truth of history then we are condemned to repeat it.

If we are going to take down statues of those that have done something wrong in their past then we would be taking the great majority of them down, the statues are there to represent either what they have achieved or what the have contributed to society. As time moves on and views change perhaps statues should be removed or replaced but tohave a rent a mob group start tearing them down will only lead to social disorder and anarchy, which is quite possibly the main aim of the groups.

I see that a 'black lives matter' march was brought forward to today on London because of likely counter demonstrations on Saturday by what is described by the BBC as the 'far right '.
Presumably the ' far right' as described by the BBC march on Saturdays because they are at work during the week.

Some organisation under the banner of Democratic Football Lads Alliance are supposedly in charge of a counter demo.
Guess there’s no footie on yet

No way will they turn up on the same day as the football lads, unlike the police they won't stand and watch while monuments are desecrated.
