Smock Top

The Deerhunter smock came today!

I've worn it for about 10mins and had a good look over it.
All I can say is wow! I think it is an absolute bargain at £150
The quality is exceptional, better than any Ridgeline I e handled - it feels very robust, it is brilliantly thought out/designed (the hood, storm flaps, zip). I would really like it to have had a chest pocket or a front 'kangaroo pouch' as there's not much pocket space but the 2 hand pockets are good.

It is a fleece bonded material, the fleece is very soft to touch (almost like velvet) and the backing is very hard wearing feeling - there's no lining. The tags say it is Deer-Tex, so their version of Gore-Tex. The storm cuffs in the sleeves are a neoprene material and hug to your wrists, they go up the arm 4-5inches so water getting up the sleeve shouldn't be an issue.

The main chest zip is chunky plastic so will work in all weather/mud and won't rust and the poppers on the hood and storm flaps feel solid. The pocket, underarm and side zips are finer (metal) and storm-taped so should be fully waterproof. All seams are taped, too.

I bought Medium which was listed as for 38-39.5" chest which is what I am. Wearing a wooly jumper over a polo shirt for working today, with my usual zip up fleece under my other smock - the Deerhunter fits perfect, so sizings are good IMO.

Obviously I need to try it outside in bad weather (plenty of that currently!) but if you're looking at the Ridgelines at £120-£135, I think you're better spending the extra £20-£30 and getting this. It feels too good to work in!

Looks good, looking forward to hearing how it handles a full day in heavy rain, with 20.000 h20 it should be good. Had my ridgeline on today was on the bike all afternoon putting buckets out to the hill ewes, it was about 3 degrees with constant and heavy hail and sleet showers and blowing a gale, and have to say it was brilliant! I was really warm and dry. Can’t beat a smock for that kind of work and weather.

Never mind smocks, if it doesn’t stop raining here I’ll be needing something a bit more robust......

Whilst we are on the topic on smock tops. Iv got a feeling my kaiwaka will become to warm before long. (Wishful thinking). Does anyone know of a fleece type smock top. I have seen ridgeline one. Just wondering if there is anything else about. Want it really long to come right down over my waterproofs

Not sure if they are what you're looking at?
They are both warm, the top one being warmer. I've not worn it too much yet - plan to wear it with bib and brace at lambing when I (hopefully) won't need the smock to keep rain off...

The bottom one is more for layering, I actually wear it for good - over a rugby shirt or under a wax jacket/body warmer depending on weather and temp. if I'm up town and need to look semi smart or at market...

Kiawaka or Swazi do fleeces maybe more like what you're after (but they'll be more expensive - those 2 Ridgelines were only around £40)

This rain doesn't look like clearing off, it'll get a good test soon.

I've talked it up... I'll be disappointed if it's no good now!

I have this and it is brilliant, very very warm and windproof and light shower proof, it also has lots of handy pockets. I also have a similar stoney creek top at twice the price, but it's not as good. Highly recommend it?

Ive got the bottom Ridgeline (obviously) and it’s amazing. I live in it.

Rocking the Ridgeline hoodie on a haulage job. (For all the HSE fans I'm stationary with the handbrake on and the engine off).

That makes a nice change from the battered and grease-stained contractors jacket that looks like it has been 'borrowed' off a tarmacking crew. Lifestyle and rural fashion influencer, part-time shepherd. We get it now, you'll start a stream of folks posting themselves in all their outdoor regalia now.

I have the Kaiwaka fleece and tbh it’s really good and holds out some fair showers!

I've still got that. I have to wear it whenever I step out the cab.

First proper morning p*ssing down wearing the Deerhunter. Aye, it's VERY good. Really pleased (y)

Not smocks, but toories (beanie hats). I'm always wearing one through the winter months - I've sworn by Sealskinz for many years wearing these;

The very first one was thick, well made and brilliant. I had it 7-8 years before it accidentally got put through a tumble dry cycle when I washed it, which knackered the waterproof membrane and shrunk the liner...
I've gone through 2 in the last couple years. They've shifted making them to China. They're a lot thinner. The wind gets through them - they're still waterproof, but the sizing!! I take M sized hats, but these I'm buying as large as I can get and they're still too small. 5mins after putting it on, it's ridden up off my head... sadly a total rip off for £20

Just happened to be on eBay the other night and found this

It came yesterday lunchtime. I wore it all afternoon and all this morning. It fits!! It's really, really warm and is waterproof (y) compared to Sealskinz it's an absolute bargain at £6.99. Very chuffed with it, so if anyone is looking for a new hat, get one bought.

If you want a proper hat, you want a Simms exstream goretex hat. Can’t be beaten, apart from maybe on price,

Already got a hat like that... wear it in torrential rain but I much prefer a toorie

What size did you go for, I’m like you long and thin, so tend to have to get a large in jackets or the sleeves are too short but then the body is baggy
