So how do you achieve low N in sb

We sell about a thousand tons per year of low N malting barley.

Good place to start is $hite light land with no N reserve. Grow a approved variety like laureate or diablo. I give it 100 units of N.

Buy a combine that's far too big. You'll need that to get it before quality starts to go. Have a good grain drier. Don't be afraid to cut wet. Don't dry over 65c. It will destroy germination.

Finally you'll need a bit of luck. I'd my first load rejected on Friday for low germination. Had 3 away already out of same pile.

Lots of people are giving up growing it around here. Fed up of rejections from not meeting spec. Lots of leftover malting barley from 2019 harvest due to distilleries being shut due to covid. 2nd period of lockdown would knacker the job completely. Trade deals aren't helping prices either.

We'll carry on as normal with our heads buried in the sand! Can't think of a decent alternative on our poor land.

Hope you guys get a good backend and plant every acre available with wheat!

Heavy land
cover crop
notill high seed rate
early n Pre drilling
April planting
1.6 to 1.8 n 90% of the time
the rejections are ergot germ( if you risk it )

premium needs to be £10 to risk sending it irispective of how good the test data is

Suprised you want a cover crop , will take N out of the soil and carry it over winter ,but you dont know like FYM , when and how much it will release back in the next growing season ,

For us it’s a direct correlation with yields.
Usually we get 7-8t/ha with Planet and N is generally 1.7 - 1.8. This year yield about 5t/ha and N 2.0 - 2.1. I find that it’s a bit like protein in milling wheat , higher yields equal diluted N.

100kgs/n on straight away, maybe even less if all down the spout. This is on clay. It needs to yield over 6.5t to get below 1.85 I’ve found. Some and some this year.
