Strava running app highlighting illegal routes on farms

For those that don’t use the extremely popular running app Strava I urge you to go on it and have a look at the ‘routes’ marked up on the maps section. They have just updated to show ‘heat maps’ where people walk/run regardless of whether it is legal to do so. And in turn this is encouraging more people to use them.

We have three marked up and promoted running routes on Strava right through our farmyard which has no public right of way. It also shows loads of places where people have run/walked on land that is not open to the public.

We have opened up a complaint with Strava to get the routes removed ASAP as it nearly resulted in a runner with earphones in not hearing or seeing a reversing telescopic. I would urge you all to do the same.

Why cant your farm lobby /leaders push for this antiquated idiot law to be done away with? Footpaths may have been a necessary thing pre Roman's. Pre roads. Pre anything 20th century. But christ almighty you dont burn witches at the stake anymore nor even have the death penalty let alone beheading.....So it's not an insurmountable thing to change....In the current world, with public liability and all things suing......surely "private property " should be just that.

I don’t think we can compare their NFU with NSW Farmers Association or the NFF or various industry lobby groups . . .

Our farm lobby are happy to sell us down the river for a packet of Custard Cremes.

How much is your public liability insurance covering you to? To compare what we need in this country compared to yours

The heat map just shows a user where they have been. You can see maps use over a particular area. They are not new and have been on Strava for a long time. The heat bit means that it’s been used a lot which may have been by one person a number of times.

In my case at one time a field of mine had a very heavy use that was one of my contractors drivers running it ( probably by mistake) while he was mowing. Also I know if you look at my village the is an extreme amount of going round in circles half a mile away. This is soldiers running the perimeter of an army camp. That may be a security issue for the MOD

TBH I think this is a bit of a non story, if someone shouldn’t be somewhere just tell them.

It's a personal thing, not a mandated amount. Our insurance broker highly recommends a minimum of $20 million. Due in part to recent court judgements.
Ours is £15m too but they have said depending on a few national things it could well be £20m needed next time 🤷🏻‍♂️
never claimed on it but a ridiculous amount of footpaths across the farm they’ve said better to be safe than sorry.

err, re the MOD

I believe a couple of years ago our military warned its members ( especially female, but directed to all ) about using Strava due to personal security risks, showing their regular running routes

They need to watch what they wish for, if you push too hard the politicians might decide that the Scottish "right to roam" legislation is a better way forward! Bloody nightmare at times.

That's never going to happen. Policy and legislation will open more access up, not the other way around. We have 67 million people squeezed into an area smaller than Victoria, most of whom want the freedom to go wherever they like.

This is the heat map of some of my meadows

The darker blue represents the more heavily used routes. Don’t mix it up with the waterways. All of these routes are footpaths so nobody is where they shouldn’t be. Strava gets the data from whatever device you are using and puts it all together. No doubt there is a market for it. All these paths are freely available on an os map, so I really don’t see an issue

I can guarantee most of that data is created by Mrs Bg running and dog walking:)
