Our road was gated. One half was put down in 1798 enclosure. The other half was owned by one chap until ww1. Council decided to surface it and open it up. Bet it costs then a filthy fortune to keep it fixed. Pikey rat run now. Suggested they could gate it again - the highways officers face was a complete picture!

Suppose you have a point there.....joe public probably expect something for all the gubament coin they dish out in subsidies every year......Heres a novel idea. Do away with subsidies and make your farms pay their way...

How would that make any difference to bridleway/ footpath access?
These have existed for 100s if not 1000s of years

Subs have existed for what, 50yrs?

I don't think you are understanding quite what a huge 'holy grail', footpaths/ bridleways are in the UK.
It's often completely comical, organisations like the Rambers association will fight any change to the bitter end, even changes such as moving a path to make it safer.

The National park authority of the national park we farm in, wanted to merge a footpath and bridleway on our place, the two routes run side by side, the bridle way is well maintained, the footpath is a deep sunken lane with water issues. Not to mention a saving to said tax payers on gates, styles etc by having one route.
A completely sensible move.

One person.... ONE person, who lives at the opposite end of the country, opposed every part of the process, causing the case to have to go to the very very top- the secretary of state for decision.
I dread to think what the whole process cost.

It's completely nuts!

Hey @cows sh#t me to tears , it seems like every second post on TFF are complaining about footpaths, walkers, dogs etc, but as soon as you suggest doing something it’s all too hard or impossible or some people like them . . . Not a lot of enthusiasm for trying to change things or seems. We spent nearly 15 years battling Shenhua ( owned by Chinese government ) & politicians on both sides of the spectrum, but we won through eventually. You can’t give up . . .
@cows sh#t me to tears , I think we have to realise that the poor sods who live in the UK “countryside” apparently don’t have access to all the public spaces & green areas that we are used to. They obviously don’t have parks or sporting grounds in their villages & towns like we do. Being in Parks & Gardens in Gunnedah Shire, we have over 400 ha & about 37 seperate locations, of “green areas” we look after, just in Gunnedah itself. They are all free & open to everyone. These include “proper” Parks, sporting ovals & fields, areas along the river, electricity easements, various reserves etc. Then, as you say, what about the streets in towns / villages, all the footpaths along every street & roads leading out of them ? People are always going for a stroll, taking the dog for a walk, jogging etc etc around town. They don’t need to be going through farms for exercise, fresh air or just for a bit of greenery.
These are just areas that Council are responsible for, not to mention a few State Forests locally, State owned reserves & recreation areas & the vast network of State Forests, National Parks & various other public “green” areas on a wider scale

Apparently there is no will to change things either in the UK 😞

as for 1000 years ? Pfftt !! 60,000 years of tradition, culture & law was disregarded with one pen stroke by previous Brit governments, 1000 is nothing.

See when there are stories about British tourists getting pee'd and leaving mess and litter all over NZ / Aus? Like this:

Well, this is what everyone here is like. Free BBQ in a park? There will be drunk gypsy fights, nitrous oxide canisters, dirty nappies, mountains of litter.

We long since exported all our hard workers to the colonies. Now just a nation of jawless accountants, and assorted welfare scum. In a country where it rains a lot and is miserable weather.

Good idea, would it work in UK though...............your land in Oz is cheap per acre, ours is more expensive at £6-10,000 per acre though

For those that don’t use the extremely popular running app Strava I urge you to go on it and have a look at the ‘routes’ marked up on the maps section. They have just updated to show ‘heat maps’ where people walk/run regardless of whether it is legal to do so. And in turn this is encouraging more people to use them.

We have three marked up and promoted running routes on Strava right through our farmyard which has no public right of way. It also shows loads of places where people have run/walked on land that is not open to the public.

We have opened up a complaint with Strava to get the routes removed ASAP as it nearly resulted in a runner with earphones in not hearing or seeing a reversing telescopic. I would urge you all to do the same.

Envcourage dog walks - the hounds will chase and bite the runner who will call the police who will have the dogs destroyed. Simples.

Strava map of my old place, blue lines are actual footpath, golf course at the top is obvious.
People wandering all over the place where they have no right or reason to be there. This is a family farm, about as isolated as you can get in Cheshire and this is only the folk that have the Strava app I assume so doesn't include everyone.
I doubt there are many farms in Australia having to put up with this and I am sure this is almost "normal" for the UK.

It is here too but what exactly are you going to do?
All you are legally allowed to do is ask them to leave and nearly of them do when asked.
Usual responses are we thought we had the right to roam, they don't.
We weren't sure where the footpath went, well it is up to them to know where they are going and all footpaths are adequately marked.
What harm are we doing
The owner said we could go here (no I didn't)
Feck off you tosser I will go where I want.

Devil's advocate here - some folks have farms with footpaths/ PRW, others have farms without. Those without are more valuable as a result. Why should those who farm the less valuable land get a free upgrade because they're not prepared to work with the public/ put up adequate fencing to keep intruders out?

Yes, I know it's not as simple as that, but as I read it our Australian correpondents want to take established rights away from the public and give the effectively shared (public/ private) assets 100% to the private sector.

Is trespass a crime where you are? I mean, can the police arrest a trespasser who isn't doing any actual damage?
Kind of depends on the situation. Here you will see a lot of signs on properties saying ",trespassers will be prosecuted " trouble is when it comes time to actually prosecute, our (like your) pathetic courts would throw 99% out with not even a caution in most cases.
Last year there was a case against 2 feral hippie dirty slags from "animals Australia " who trespassed onto a dairy goat farm and stole the pet goat from the farm shop (place was set up as a tourist attraction). Went to court and even though one of them was found with the goat still in her possession, received a $10 fine FFS. .
