I wouldn’t defend anything I saw Monday night but if taking the calf away after a few hours, surely red tractor would have rules in place
I thought the cow that was down appeared to be on the turntable of the rotary
She needed to be got off
We all know there are cases out there which red tractor was meant to be sorting.
I test for red tractor and refused to give a pass on a farm,
He was overjoyed when someone gave him a ticket and only there half an hour
That ex emerdale bloke was on to last night talking about mental health for farmers
He’s only been a farmer five mins, how must the farmer be feeling who’s farm was filmed
Where is the training and testing of foreign workers
There is a lot more to this.
Putin is thinking of invading what happens we all collectively gang together to help
We should be getting together to sort problem, not waving a stick thinking the problem will go away.

You won't defend the part about calves taken off their mother's soon after birth, I don't know all the facts about what was going on and who was responsible , so have no comment on th abuse
There was a counter argument made regarding the calves and it’s obviously never going to be an easy topic of conversation but it is very much part of the job.

What an absolute cop out, I to do not know all the facts but I saw more than enough to make a very firm opinion. Very disturbing and incredibly damaging to us all.

What are you complaining about? The shear number of abuses means any complaint would just look like a defence of the culprit. It was far from one sided after all, just the footage was so tough to watch it maybe came across as one sided to you?
For example

There could have been an opportunity to have filmed a down cow on another farm with a vet where things are done properly, along with saying "Downer cows are a problem, this is the best way of dealing with them" - eg use Metacam, lifting only not dragging etc

We have a hip clamp that is used occasionally and it has saved many cows.
The whole programme was set up to damage our industry.

How do you deal with down cows ?

Quite and the farming community should stand together and say this is not acceptable red tractor is obviously not up to the task.
If a foreign doctor comes into this country they don’t let him into the first operating theatre to carve up the first patient he sees
If I had a herd of 700 cows I’d be very choosy who I had working with them
What that program should be telling us we need better training and more inspection of staff

the way it is at the moment it’s hard to find any staff, I think any farmer who agree’s with everything that has happened to the farmer in question is a massive hypocrite.

I see your point, they gave a vet an opportunity to respond and he said it was common practise if you recall.

I’d suggest moving them to the straw pen in the handler bucket perhaps? Rolled in and rolled out. Very very uncommon to see a down cow outside of the high input setting in my experience.

What found disturbing was that the downer cow, which had been seen by the vet , was apparently left for 24 hours to be euthanised. How on earth do we know this is true? We only have a vegan activist’s account.

Can we be 100% sure the vets comments related to what we saw, it could have been edited.
We have an 8000 l herd, loose housed.
We might go a year without a downer and then have 2 in quick succession. I always get the Metacam out, give it time to work before using the clamp. We always have a halter on before lifting to control them when they’re up and release clamp slowly & carefully.

Need a big bucket to move some of these cows, have we all got to buy a huge grain bucket? There's a h&s angle to rolling cows about too, easy to get a kick in the head, and virtually impossible if you are on your own.
Not picking an argument before anyone gets the hump, just trying to think these things through. Have tried one of those belly slings before, but that wasn't very good either. The only thing that was close to satisfactory was a hip hoist on the back end and a 4-5 inch sling under the chest, for moving a cow.

So there is no plan B for the farm it's red tractor is terminated due to actions of it's staff. I don't know about other history. But even on what I hope is a good farm it makes me nervous.

A farmer can loose his livelihood because of his staffs actions.
The met police force admits it has employed murderers. Racists and misogynists and abused people in police cells. However it is still a police force today and this farmer is no longer a dairy farmer.

I don't want to justify any of the actions we have seen in the farm. But what this shows to me is if the antis can video bad practice on my dairy farm they can break my business. It's certainly a model that works for them and not me.
That's spooky. Listen to Chris walkland later on in the kite podcast today and read above. He and I seem to think very alike.

well sounds like some on here would have him in front of a firing squad, and that’s coming from fellow peers who could easily find themselves in the same position!
