Wheat seed rates

Did it go flat? Double rate would be a lot more than anyone else would aim to do. I ignore those bits of the yield maps anyway.

No it was all stood up, just looked a little thicker and had to slow down, its usually more heads but smaller, with no loss but this year a definite loss in each field.

Granted double dosing is not normal but high seed rates, can look better with more straw, but its only grain I need.

Worth remembering in dry countries they limit plant numbers as there is only enough moisture to feed a few... but will we be a dry country next year?

That’s why we are around 50 kg
We are only interested in the grain ( don’t bale straw as it’s too valuable as ground cover ), no point getting a lot of early vegetive growth if we run out of moisture to fill the grain . . .
We do also work on a lot of tillers / plant. If conditions are good the plant will tiller a lot more, or produce bigger heads, effectively compensating to a degree for a lower population. Have seen plenty of 5 - 7 t / ha cereals on 50 kg of seed . . .
We are basically farming stored sub soil moisture, not regular in crop rainfall

wheat with claydon
300-350 seeds/m2 or 160-180kg/ha seed size looks big this year so might be higher.
never worry about evenness of emergence, broadcasting seed was what we did up to early 80's and it was always ok

so far 200 kg will now up it to 225 kg half autumn crops in

very wet here and not likely to drill any more for a 10 days only 2 summers have been wetter in the last 30 years

last year 225 kg planted by 5 October the only problem was where early n was at a too high rate with basset
this year elicit at 25 kg less

with a stack plus a good thick stand the bg is reduced
if it is too thick then nitrogen fert can be adjusted putting on extra n in the early spring for a thin crop is not very effective
