Which aftercut fert

I’m no expert on fert so here’s my question, after a first cut what would my fields need for some to go on and have a second cut and others to graze stock until back end? For the grazing this year I put in 25.5.5 and silage ground got a 20.8.12

No no and no, too many acres to start all that carry on. I’m. It putting some type here and some other type there

For silage ground regardless of soil test i use 2.5k Gallons of slurry plus 100kg per acres of 18/6/12.
If no slurry i'd go with 3.5 bags.

With comments regarding soil tests, is that a comment in general or just towards silage ground.

You cant know how you are doing or project how much grass you can grow if you dont know whats in your soil.

I hope to grow between 15-16 ton of dm/ha this year(drought dependant) i couldnt do that if I didnt know how much nutrient the soil requires. Only need to test every 3-5 years.

A standard aftercut grade would be 24.0.15 or more commonly now 24.0.14 + Sulphur

The point being made above is that the p & K requirement will be significantly different for soils with an index of 0 compared with an index of 4

Id pay to get the lot soil tested. It will tell you where best to put the slurry and may save you a fortune in P and K.

Otherwise you are completely blind. Less than 20 quid a field.

Chucking nutrients about without a clue is not something I would encourage anyone to do.

As Adam said the best aftercut products are 24.4.14 + sulphur. Its unbeatable imo.

Is there any point soil testing between cuts when the last fertiliser application could've been 6 or 8 weeks earlier? I'm sure I've read something about not soil sampling within 3 months of fertiliser or slurry/manure applications.
I'd go with something like 22:4:14+S, how much you apply depends on how much grass you need to grow.

I just want an all round fert to green things up again . Might sample the whole bit one day but not this time.
If you are in England and apply any muck or slurry to those fields (and that is usually the best place to apply it as the nutrient profile is quite a good match to silage requirements) then it is a legal requirement to have tested in the last 5 years. It's a way of forcing farmers to do what any common sense should be telling them to do anyway.

no I agree you shouldn't be testing that close to a previously applied P/K fert or muck, which is why a proper soil testing programme should be planned in advance. If he already has very high K levels or for example put a dose of muck or slurry on last back end or spring then he may end up with very high K silage which leads to problems.

Always tend to use Kaynitro or a similar 25.0.15 sort of product for aftercut plus sulphur if possible. But as has been said this is assuming Phosphate levels are adequate or addressed at another time. Potassium and Nitrogen are perhaps more critical than phosphate for second cut.

If you really don’t want to soil test then putting about 75.0.45 +S should get the grass motoring anyway providing you get some nice showers to wash it in.

I’m not against soil sampling it’s just I have a lot of ground and don’t want loads of different types of fert for different fields . I’m just a hill farmer at end of day

I put 5cwt of fibro phos + 3cwt 34.5 N pre cutting. Hopefully not need any 2nd cut so will follow up with a decent application of FYM + 1cwt N.

Yes best time to test is January/February before anything applied. Your readings would be unreliable now if you have spread fert or slurry or dung on the area. If you haven’t applied then its grand.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
