My gut feeling is we will drill some winter wheat by the end of January. Plough power Harrow and run the MF30 behind the lowest ground pressure tractor known to mankind at a good speed. It's surprising how quickly the land firmed up last week (where the drains are working properly).

I really do want to avoid wall to wall spring barley.

Feel a bit like a coiled spring at the minute. Not going to maul it though. Would rather leave it fallow. Patience patience and keep an eye on ground conditions. Be ready to pounce.

We are about 4 miles west of Baldock. Pretty much all the Maize around here is for AD and was cut in early / mid September in dry conditions. A lot of chalk along the A505 corridor which is free draining. You don’t have to go much further north and west to find very little done.

I am at Barton, just north of Royston and managed to get all mine in with the MF30 in a very small window working long hours. Very sticky and doesn't look great but it is in at least!

In a 1st cereal situation the margin on spring barley followed by wheat next year compared to late wheat followed by and wheat or barley would depend on grass weed pressure
the type of soil would be the biggest factor although most of the easier working free draining land will already be planted on many farms
spring barley in 2012 was a better margin than wheat with the near elimination of black grass

Well it’s dried a bit, as in we have no standing water in fields now but it still wouldn’t drill on either stubbles or lightly discern. So I will keep waiting and hope we get some dryin weather in Jan

I think taking a punt with some late Jan drilled winter wheat is better than trying to find none existent spring wheat seed and I don’t want all spring barley as that will screw up next years rotation

I don't see any point going now , surely after xmas the days get longer and the odds of survival increase

I managed to get mine drilled. I was advised to wait twice. I took the advise the first time, the second time I thought no, i'm going for it before it's too late. Headlands are like glue. A few blockages but more speed helped. I even managed to roll most of it.

I think there is a town around there called “Sandy”. Not, for no reason.
There is and it is the home of a lad I am being best man for this next year, was down in mid September and it was very dry, roadside verges burnt up and been this weekend and crops in the area look well and all the way up to north Norfolk, some very good OSR. From Kings Lynn to the A1 Newark is like a battlefield and nothing much looks ok all the way up to North Yorks.

Most drying wind here since September. Shame it’s going to rain tomorrow and Thursday.:banghead::mad:
Yes, same here, nice bit of sun but had a lot of rain last night, seems one step forward and then two back, think the longest we've had without rain was last week, 3 days but very little drying occurred as no wind. Got some more ground turned over so will go again next frost.

Only 2 steps back, feels more like 15 :)

IF we get some dry weather in Jan or Feb I think I will be drilling the spring wheat, not the winter varieties. Thanks to the 3 crop rule we have some HSS available for ourselves. Only just enough for this spring requirement.
I may be wrong but I think any wheat sown after Jan 31st is a spring wheat, for the purposes of product approvals. So any winter variety sown after then should only be treated with products approved for spring wheat (?)

Not that these crops will need a lot of chemical input anyway, but if this is the case there's not a lot approved for the spring crop.
