Winter barley varieties for 2021

With the winter barley harvest under way has anyone given any thoughts as to which varieties to grow next year.

Around here they all seem to be equally as disappointing whether its hybrid, convention two or 6 row.

I'd also be intersted in which varieties have the best straw yield.

I think I'll stick with cassia, although valerie seems like a potential replacement. I may also try a bag or two of funky and maybe a bag of hybrid just for fun.

Kingston hybrid is looking well, looks as though there will b plenty of straw
The thing I found odd about bazooka was the lack of straw despite it looking like there would be mountains of it. It seemed to be that once the grain was fit enough to thrash cleanly the straw knocked up and seemed to just vanish.

Difficult to make any variety decisions based on this year's crops given the terrible weather conditions they have had to endure. Our Mountain w b had huge ears this time and the grain is quite bold but yield has been hit by low plant numbers and bare patches.

Yes, here the hybrids did relatively worse than the conventionals, this time, due to appalling conditions when they needed to tiller well - last harvest it was the complete opposite.

And varieties with very long (i.e. short) straw did better this time than those slightly less long (i.e. very short).

Tip of the day ... grow wheat , sell wheat buy barley .

Barley does me well up there. In the catalogue for here there were three or four resistant varieties so hopefully will be good.

That's where triticale could fit the bill. Growing costs similar to barley, sale price £5 under wheat(or same as wheat I'd your clever) straw is the only down side.

Triticale is the most widely grow crop in this region for its reliability. I always have a patch. This years did ok

Anyone growing Craft?
We are for the second year. Did 8.5t ha if I remember correctly last year. This years will be cut in a week or so.
Only 150kg N for malting.
Budgeting 7.5t this year but time will tell. One field is a bit rubbbish (4ha out of 20)
We don't look like we are facing the disastrous harvest that the south is.
