Does anyone else feel that if you plant a very vulnerable crop on your boundary you shouldn't expect your neighbour to change his farming operation to benefit you? Certainly not without offering to compensate said neighbour for the inconvenience? Presumably seed potatoes are a pretty profitable crop - why should the OP lose out and the neighbour gain at his expense?

A really good point.

Would the neighbour not be open to doing it themselves to make sure its done right?

They all do around here just wash it out properly
No they don’t. When we used to grow we didn’t. We now let out some land for spuds and he won’t spray roundup through his machine, he gets someone else in. Would there not be an issue for insurance of a contractor if he knowing sprays roundup next to a field of potatoes anyway?

I can’t see how there could possibly be an issue spraying roundup on a field next to potatoes, the potato grower doesn’t own the field so has no right whatsoever to control what happens on that field.
Of course spray drift out of the intended field is another matter

Because you are liable for where you spray falls. Be it neighbouring field or watercourse.

They do around here no problem with insurance either

I have known farms that have a dedicated sugar beet sprayer that only sprays beet. If doing a large acreage of potatoes I suspect many farms will take the same approach. It's not worth the risk. I'm not saying it is impossible to do safely but if they have a large acreage of spuds they might well have a dedicated machine for it.

I bet some of the biggest and most expensive spraying mistakes have happened in spuds.

But that’s a case of spray not landing on its intended target and would be a matter for a public liability claim, the same as any other spray drift causing a problem or any other crop in a neighbouring field.
Unless someone knows otherwise there are no laws or regulations I’m aware of preventing roundup being sprayed on a field next to potatoes.

There’s not. It’s the value of the claim that’s the issue. Scamming a bit of OSR or wheat next door is not a massive cost compared to seed potatoes. Especially as the damage isn’t seen until they are planted in the ground next year.

Agreed, I wouldn't deliberately let it drift onto the neighbours crop no different than if it was my own but i wouldn't not spray something as the neighbour has planted something there thats a bit "sensitive"
Wiping out a seed potato crop is mega money,
Not like curling a crappy field of osr a wee bit.
I wouldnt go near it with yours.
There is no need to spray this field at all, andif its rough ploughed i wouldnt take asprayer near it

This is what I don't understand. Complains contractor won't apply deadly chemicals. Then goes on to diatribe against deadly chemicals.
sold field --- incoming man wants it cleared prior to grassing as he has cattle, the contractor wont spray it as per poss tatties next door he tells me, i have never used chemicals and never will i just wondered if what i was told was usual-- got the answer job done simples as they say.
