The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) released the results of its spring planting and variety survey yesterday, July 8.
Irish growers will no doubt be interested to see how areas have changed from last season to see what may be affecting markets...
Given that we are trying to use much less seed treatment I am looking at cleaning our own seed. I'm not certain that gravity separation is essential, is anyone using something similar to below?
Some of the stuff i've sown is, some is ok, some is terrible!
It looks like i've sown it too thin, but I've not, it is desperate for a good downpour, I was thinking while driving from them earlier, there's not been drop of proper rain since they went in the ground.
How's yours looking?
As above , the idea is that it will crush some clods in bare patches ,thereby creating seed to soil contact? I say that as looks to have been a job to conserve moisture where crops have been planted conventionally.
Probably not the only one in this position.
We generally use Urea and at the moment no rain ? and been warm and sunny.
The situation I have is wheat has only had 40u and its sulphur, half S Barley (now emerging) has had nothing, 2nd half S Barley, I had the sense to put a 3rd of its N in...
On the basis that many commercial property tenants are asking for reductions or deferment of rents should we as farmers be asking landlords for the same ?
If I were to put 200kgs/ha of urea down the spout for spring barley, being all of its N requirement will it burn the seed?
My view is use less total N but place it better for spring malting barley on strong land.
I currently put about 30kgs liquid N down the spout but I am looking at converting...
Does anyone have experience of the different tillering rates of the main varieties on the market? Is there any real difference? I'm thinking of varieties like Planet, Diablo and Cosmopolitan.
Any help gratefully received in order to fill in my ignorance, having not grown it since 2013!
Is it worth growing, the sense is every man and his dog is putting loads in, but the I read online many have drilled up with WW, driving through Suffolf the other day and there's lots more WW in than around Peterborough so is it worth it?
Is there any seed?
How much is seed???
Spring planting and seed shortages update
Farmers needn’t be reminded of the wet autumn we experienced in 2019, and with seed shortages likely for spring planting, the good news is Cope Seeds is geared up to meet your organic spring seed orders. Hear the latest industry update from Gemma...
It brackles. It breaks down. It lodges. Heads twist off in the wind. Hungry pigeons flatten it.
Given it won't sit and wait like wheat does, just how much spring barley can be cut with current capacity? For those going wall to wall spring cereals and who need contractors to cut, are you happy...
Wondering if anyone else has had skinning claims on their malting barley contracts in North Scotland? Local merchant I deal with has been taking claims on anything over 4% which I'm really not happy about when the contract they provided me says no claims up to 8%. Any advice on what to do?
