Best tine drills for cover crops?

Our current TS EVO drill is good at most things except heavy trash and DD really.

I would like to have the opportunity to DD when appropriate, with the ability to handle cover crops as well.
What sort of tine machine is suited to heavy ground, drilling rape , borage ,barley wheat, beans and covers?Must also be good in the wet!

Convert an old CO like mine? It would have a limit re cover crops trash though like any tine but I have seen a conversion that places a straight disc blade ahead of each tine - can't recall who makes it however but that would be a great set up

Other than that I think the Vikar would probably be the best option for a new machine? it has that disc in front of a tine arrangement

There is no substitute for lots of space between each tine. I found the disc lacking when I had a simtech on demo in one field, where I recon the ground was too soft for the discs to cut wiry stems against. It was managing, but kept building up between the close banks of tines.

My current tine drill in on 214mm rows with the tines spread over 3 banks, 700mm apart. It can still block up in severe conditions but I have also used it to drill into a cover crop when the unidrill kept blocking up and also drilling across oat swaths after they had been rained on for over a month. I expect a CO with even more space between the tines would be better.

As a qucick fix, remove every other tine from the TS and block the outlets to those on the distributor head. I recall they are on 125mm tine spacing as standard so with every other removed they would be similar to a CO with narrow points on 250mm rows.

I can drill into pretty much anything with my TS with 36 tines over 6m, as long as the trash is still.attached to the ground.

Did you just convert it to 1" Dutch openers?

Not dutch - Bougault VOS, tried Metcalfe and making my own (which I'm still tinkering with) but both designs had issues the VOS solves - also now running with drawbar and front tank rather than the seed cart in wet conditions

Pleased you got it running, I like the idea of putting a disc in front of the tine as well - ingenious

New design Weaving Sabre Tine has been launched this month and will be at Lamma, looks quite good on paper, improved ability to handle trash and cover crops apparently. Hydraulically adjustable depth control looks great if it works!

I saw some pictures of this last month and I think it will be a very good option

The one I’ve only seen distant pictures of is the new mounted Horsch tined drill with front tank that’s at flawborough be very interested to see what it looks like.

I have that here now - they don't have it right yet but are working on some mods, at the moment our trailed CO using the front hopper is a better job

these have been working well, as clive said, convert a CO or sprinter. We made these legs using a Jim point. Doesn’t plug or wear like the seed tube. Also doesn’t plug or leave seed on top. Works well with beans too. No blocking up.

I may be wrong but I’ve studied several direct and strip til drills recently and in my opinion they all need a disc in front of leg to cut through the trash.otherwise I’m sure most of me will block up in a cover crop.i saw a Claydon going in the cover crops at cereals at duxford 18 months ago and it had massive amounts of trash round every leg and it all looked very unsatisfactory.i really like the look of the virkar but they don’t make 3m versions.the whole machine just looks right to me

Plus one for Horsch co. with dutch, gen, metcalfe or bourgault openers...(you pays your money and makes your choice!) I fitted leading discs with complete sucess. (you will need to move the radar behind the wheel too if in high covers.
