Discovery 4 engine seized

My 2011 Discovery 4 with 98000 miles on the clock has died. Seems quite common, heard of quite a few doing the same. Can anyone recommend a good man to put it right? Or would I be better to cut my losses and sell it as it is.

I just had engine rebuild on my disco 3 , but it wasn't seized , whole body job off though , bill came to about £3.5 plus vat , I could of got a recon engine for around £2.5k and probably cost about £1k to fit , so I think yours would definitely be worth fitting a recon engine unless you get a very good scrap price .
Have you got FLRSH , if so it may be worth approaching LR for some help , John from cowcare posted on here about a month ago that his engine broke due to same problem as mine (cam tensioner mount breaking) on a 2009 disco with 120k on the clock from memory and LR gave him a new engine as it's a known design fault . The same could be true if the bearing cases have turned as there is a LR bulletin on this , if however you did not buy it off LR they wont help

My 2013 disco 4 engine crankshaft failed 3 weeks ago with 63k on the clock. Out of warranty but Land Rover have contributed 60% of total costs as well as dealer contribution. I had to really fight hard to get that. They know they have a serious problem but will not admit it.

This was just posted on a LR website by a LR indie mechanic in reply to the question of a rough cost to source and fit a 2nd hand engine .....

Never fitted a used 3.0, due to them

themselves so often...

2.7 replacement is £4.5k inc new oil pump and belts while it’s in bits

A 3.0 replacement would be around £7k

Just also read on disco forum that 7 years and 100k miles is the cut off for LR replacing engine , so definitely worth a shot if bought of LR, one guy didn't even had full main dealer servicing , some was independent and he still got a free engine . Here is LR's bulletin regarding the issue

Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine

Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.

Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud ‘rumbling/knocking’ sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.

Funny thing is I was vilified by some on this forum for bringing this to people's attention a few years ago, probably around 2015. It was a problem not only of fairly high mileage versions of the V6 but also of quite new ones.
The same happened when I highlighted the Navara chassis debacle when some people vehemently claimed that it was only happening to misused and neglected examples. We now all know very different of course.

Thanks for the replies, didn't buy the Disco of LR but had it since 20000 miles and been serviced at the appropriate time. These LR TDV6 3L engines are a disaster, local farming company have had 3 Disco's do it. Local man had his 3 month old Discovery die last year with crankshaft problems. Land Rover have known about this problem for a long time and done nothing about it.

Sounds just like another big German car maker thats done far more damage with a so called engine fix
to most of the affected vehicles once the fix has been implemented. But thats a whole telephone book of
stories.... most likely covered on here somewhere.
Atleast LR are in a lot of cases helping the owners. but it should never have happened once this.
did they not bench run these engines for 100,000 miles or something?

Another car maker shirking its duty to customers. They would act quickly and make loyal land rover fans of every owner but no, too stupid.
The arrogance of midland car manufacturers was always their downfall. Land Rover have always had that ‘f**k-you’ attitude to customers when it comes to larger issues with their cars.

Make s you wonder how much it would cost to convert with a small displacement LS, might use more fuel , but at least the engine woul be bullet proof.
