Whole thread missing a key point.
Mass killing with a legal gun is rare in the uk.
But people want to ban guns or restrictions on them more than now.

People killed nearly every day with knives.
More killled with illegal guns than legal.

So why all the outcry over a freak rare event?
People want more restrictions in general and the gov will give them to us.
Regarding bikers, they may not be trying to kill themselves pe se - but when you are sat on a machine that can break the motorway speed limit in first gear..... (ps. love motorbikes, sold my last one before I killed myself)

Someone has to give a reason why an applicant should NOT be given a firearms or shotgun certificate. The applicant does not have to prove that they should be given a certificate.

Should everyone be granted a driving licence unless someone gives a reason why they shouldn't be allowed to drive.

For clarification, who is eligible to act as a "referee"? Does it have to be a person of "repute" (and what is the definition of repute) or just a person who knows the applicant?
Wrong.

I was always under the impression that everyone has the right to own a shotgun (unless they have forfeited that right for example by committing a dangerous crime) and that right does not need a reason, just wanting to own one is reason enough. However, a rifle (fire arm certificate), one needs to provide a justification for ownership (target shooting, foxes, deer etc).
Thats pretty much it , no reason required to own a sect 2 shotgun , although your FEO may ask why when he visits , just wanting to go clay shooting or game shooting will not be questioned any further.

Mention self defence and your application will go straight in the bin.

They often appear to be trying to get as close as possible without actually succeeding. No consideration for other road users. "Think bike-think twit" But I did not put twit, the first vowel being the primary choice.
And all farmers/ tractor drivers are responsible considerate drivers ? :D :D :D

So its "I dont like it so it should be banned ?" similar words were uttered in 1930`s Germany.
If you say so. The last metal detectorist I engaged with on here threatened to burn my house down. I've encountered a few shooters on my land that didn't ask permission, and quite frankly shouldn't posses a gun. My neighbour's clay pigeon shooting hobby thankfully lasted only 6 months.
Banning can't come soon enough.

"Practical Shotgun" is now a well established competitive sport in its own right (and one that GB is actually quite good at on an international level), even though it can look a bit crude and uncouth to more traditional shotgun users.

Other "well established" sports that society has moved on from are bull baiting and cock fighting.

Just because a few people want to do something doesn't mean that it should be allowed (or even that it's a good idea)
