Failed Kale

As above my Kale crop failed in the recent drought, I had planned to put it back to p.p end of summer
but just wondering thoughts on whats the earliest I could reseed? it's filling up with weeds with the recent rain
should I just leave it and spray before reseed?I did get a good bed so will it just need a harrow before drilling?

Why not spray with roundup & put stubble turnips in now?

It may do but you lose any grazing for this year

The OP is in the sunny SE of England, not west Wales.;)

Very much chancing it to sow grass seed there just now I’d have thought, unless he’s feeling lucky. Drilling into damp soil (or the top half inch) just now, then the damping not continuing, will see grass germinate and die off. Grass seed is too expensive for that these days.

Plenty of cheaper seed about .you dont have to pay a kings king's ransom
It will cost him £40 to put turnips in if he puts firt on so still a gamble with money to gain what

No . The hybrid is the fastest growing . But looking at the end of Sep . So unless you can graze in a week forget it . More money down the pan . You must have had rain . Get the grass in quick

I wouldn't say hybrid rape grows any faster. I did a trial last year with both hybrid and non and couldn't see any difference.

Benefit of it I thought was that it will grow back again after grazing.

You may be right. Was just going on what I read on the websites . Said it was faster growing, I'm hoping to try a few to see what's best ,
But I've said enough. He will have to make his own mind up. He can only be right or wrong depending on the weather

our fodder beet are the same as I think they germanatied then died in the heat :scratchhead:

A lot of ours hasn’t even chitted, or broken the seed coating yet, and that was all primed seed. In places, one in 4 plants is up to 8 leaves and looking well considering, with those in between waiting to germinate.
This small amount of rain will see it chit, along with another flush of weeds.
All is not yet lost.:)

There’s cheap everything about, but it’s not always the same value. I dare say plenty of that May hay will be cheap once it’s got musty, but will you be buying it?

Incidentally, any fert put on turnips will still be there for the following crop if it fails due to the dry.
