The accomadation on site which really makes me laugh the farmer knows there employee is ready to call in emergency it usually is for farmer benifit
Maybe for a poor employer. A better one would view accommodation on site as an ability to send them home to see their kids before school easier even on the busiest of days. Or send them for a cuppa and an hours kip on the sofa. Not every employer is a total clown.

If I put a post on Facebook or indeed up right now advertising for a general farm worker/tractor driver/herdsman etc

I can guarantee half of all the replies would be asking if accommodation is available.

Whats every one willing to pay these workers who they cant get
Depending on what the milk price is in the spring, I'm hoping to put an advert up for a general farm worker doing 40-45 hours a week minimum pay of £15/hour, weekend hours to be at £20/hour and anything over 45 hours a week to be paid at £20 also, to make a salary of around £30-£35000 annually

Would be 3 days a week plus 1 day at the weekend on rotation

Jobs would including milking in the afternoon,
Scraping up,
Moving fences,
Feeding and checking youngstock
Pressure washing,
Plate metering,
Spot Spraying,
Weighing youngstock and other husbandry tasks like worming, dehorning etc
Putting silage in during the winter,
With the odd bit of tractor work (eg: cultivating, rolling, possibly spreading slurry, assisting with silage)
But would mostly be based around the yard and with the cattle

2 weeks paid holiday
Every fourth weekend off completely
Arrive at around 8-9am depending on what they want, leaving again around 5-6pm
Pasty Wednesday, breakfast at the weekend

And the best part is you get to enjoy the clown that is me for your boss 🤡

All I expect in return is that they work reasonably hard and don't take the pee ie: if you say your gonna do something bloody well do it! And ideally, turn up almost on time

4 days - 1 at the weekend plus 3 during the week

I'm fed up of idiots, there's no point advertising a job for £10 an hour and getting a load of tits who don't know one of the cow from another.
All you end up doing is holding their hand through everything, going around checking they've done everything you wanted or else redoing what they have or haven't done.
That's assuming they even turn up!

I want someone who is going to want to work with me, someone who I can mold into my right hand man and be with me for 10+ years.

In our case it’s about eliminating a commute and lack of available housing. We are rural and isolated. You can’t recruit and expect someone to sort their own house. It becomes a huge barrier.

Being able to live where you work is such an advantage in my mind. Commuting is a waste of time for everyone.

Just be prepared for the frustrations, time commitment and going through a lot of candidates. I’ve hired too many of the wrong people and it’s taken years to get close to the right crew and it never stops. It’s an ongoing project and that’s what puts many off of it. It’s emotionally taxing

I have the best results with individuals that are young and no experience. Also some that maybe have a drinking problem or some other issue where nobody gives them the time of day. A common theme I noticed is that they all had pretty crappy childhoods and parents. I’m willing to work with them if they are willing to work with me on improvements. I have an even temperament and patience but I also set standards and let them know where the line is.

One of my best guys was a functional alcoholic for 10 years. Had some interesting times in the past but he’s completely turned his life around for the past three years. He would even call me right before getting arrested to let me know he wouldn’t be able to milk. Hell of a guy that I doubt many would be willing to put effort into.

I admire u for taking these people on and putting the effort in but there is something wrong somewhere if these are the only people who you can employ alcholics and young people with no experience ive seen plenty they get a bit older get a bit of sense get an easier job which pays much better

Where do I apply, most employers want 7 days a week for £35000.

Sounds well thought out, but I'd be checking the holiday laws as I don't think that two weeks paid would meet the legal minimum.

I think you are missing my point. I have a stable, punctual crew with no turnover for 13 months. Their skills are advancing and two are enrolled in an apprenticeship. In a time where many say they can’t get any help. I’m getting close to my desired results, who cares about the other sh!t?

This thread is about someone seeking foreign help because they have been unable to fill a position. I’d suggest people are out there if you are willing to accommodate them and provide an agreeable workplace.

And on foreign workers they would be my first pick if available because they have known hardship and they have no wish to see it again.

It would be interesting to see if you get a good worker for that package (I don't think the holidays are right either) It is just an entry level workers job though, all be it a well-paid one and you're probably limited to locals if there's no accommodation. You could get lucky and find someone good who is happy with that type of work long term. It's also possible that you'll get someone younger using you as a good start, which is great, but they'll probably move on when they get experience which means you repeat the exercise every couple of years. Other than that, you'll maybe get the same type of staff as everyone else with the same results, you'll just be paying more.

Excellent attitude and I hope it works out for you.
