Looks like we MAY get an opportunity to drill later this week, push on with Skyfall h/s and in stock or switch to sp barley or oats? All in stock and ready to go, I think stick with Wheat for another ten days max. Thoughts please

Spring barley is nearly always the best margin in this situation. Reduced BG seed return too. Only use sky fall if its a contractual/essential rotational reason.

Mulika spring wheat out performed Laureate spring barley here by £250/ha gross margin. Same yield, similar growing costs, same N, same seed rate, just a very different price for feed wheat vs feed barley.

I will try & sow Skyfall for another 3 weeks before switching to spring wheat & spring barley. It all depends on what soil type you are on, blackgrass & what you will do to it afterwards. The spread between wheat & barley grain prices should be less this year as both will potentially be at export parity.

Skyfall drilled post Sugar Beet 9th March last year did over 7t, had Ergot in though. Cochise drilled late March yielded better, with out the late summer rains last year though spring planted wheats would have been disappointing. May be spring barley would be a better bet if you can sow it early this year.

Last year it was discussed that there was some leeway in latest safe sowing dates for ww and as such I drilled some end feb cutoff 7march and it was fine. As such does that mean that before the cutoff date you are pretty much guaranteed it will vernalise? Do you have any comeback if it doesn’t?

Drilled some 25th March last year and was fine, there were zero frosts after this date
