Excuse my flippant reaction to the suggestion that a seed breeder would admit in any way to there being a problem... The cut off dates in the Recommended List have a huge safety margin built in. The risk of there not being a sufficient cold spell for each variety to vernalise goes up a lot in the next few weeks. Different varieties need different amounts of cold post germination to vernalise them.

Don't forget that there were a couple of cold spells in April and May 2020 that meant many got away with pushing the envelope. There is no guarantee that we will get those cold snaps again this year - I'll bet most would not want another repeat of 2020 weather conditions anyway!

I've got a batch of Graham seed carried over from 2019 that I'm not even going to attempt to sow now. I'll keep it and test it again in June/July or dispose of it by drilling it thickly into a couple of fields we plan to fallow ahead of osr anyway just as a cover crop. It still germinates ok but doesn't seem to have the same vigour as the Skyfall I've got in my cupboard on plates with wet kitchen paper under it. Mrs B wasn't impressed!

Sadly I have only a field or two like that, most is more like in @Longneck 's picture above

Hence using up seed that was destined for wet clay on some limestone brash that otherwise would be Spring Barley.

So totally agree @Days of thunder having a farm of easy soil would make farming infinitely easier, but sometimes glad of the heavy clay in a dry spring.

Inadvertently we did in a mix with spring wheat. Probably 5% Skyfall. It was much shorter with tiny ears (but the skyfall plants were shaded) and came to harvest at the same time.
