I really have no idea, if I can get it under 1.9 I think I am doing well. Even this year with no rain we are still in the 1.9’s

No idea. Irrespective of n, seed rate or yield ours is always 1.9 or more.
Is there no varietal differences ?
I put no N on and it still came out at 2 .

I've only grown propino as a spring. All my winter attempts end up around 2. They only take all the bonus away for skinning, germination anyway. Bit of a lark, like peas.

confess i don't know about chalky soils
.......would you describe it as 'heavy'?....light and sandy clay loams over chalk should grow low nI know nothing about light and sandy , just heavy wet shite .confess i don't know about chalky soils

That definitely sound more like wheat land to me.
(Please bear in mind I’ve only ever grown 2 crops of feed spring barely in my life and no crops of winter and I farm on light land. So please consider me the authoritative expert on growing barley on heavy land!)

Ill still grow a malting variety. Will keep sending it to central store, the any "lucky" loads go in the right bin.

malting barley is not worth growing anymore anyway...poor wheat is good as decent malter

Grow it in years when no-one else is........My FiL was a foreman Maltster and he told me that "n" content which gives the grain a steely appearance was mainly a way to create a differential 'cos he could make malt from virtually anything .....

Give it about 110 kg N on our sand and if will meet malting spec but yield about 2 t per acre. Give 140 and you will touch 3 t and sell as feed.

Grow it on inheritantly unfertile soil, put the bulk of the N in the seedbed, don't overdo the N
