Our 1st swallow scout on the 1st and a pair on the 2nd not been seen since and I can't blame them! SO cold today with hail showers. I suppose it feels colder than it actually is because of the high wind and after the glorious bare arms weather last week. However, today we did have our 1st Blackcap of the year and Blackbirds are carrying food. I have been suspicious that we had a new Magpie nest really close to the house, especially as Blackbirds frequently alarming. Was proved right yesterday when gale blew it out of the tree. Its only when you see it on the ground that you really realise how enormous their nests can be.

1st one I have seen this year.
His/her mate was out in the field swooping around.

Great feeling every year when they return.

I must be easily pleased 🤫

First pair seen here on Thursday. That it is two days earlier than our normal day of 10th April.
Always the highlight of spring when they return.

We saw our first over the farm on Friday 9th, but just passing through; as always they brought a big smile.

Our own nesting residents are usually a few weeks later than the first we see; a summer of cleaning their crap up from under the nests - but, do you know, I don't resent a moment of that, wonderful little birds. :)

Since I started this post unfortunately I have not seen any more than the original two that turned up at the end of March which were both males.
I saw a Swift two evenings ago and heard Cuckoos two weeks ago but now everything has disappeared. Cold wind and frost makes me think they have all headed south again.

Has anyone else got any more Swallows o Martins?
