Tedders

Looking at replacing our 6 star krone Tedder, a 7.82 i believe. we’ve had it 20 years, served us very well with little problems. We’ve recently moved from a 8ft cut to a 10ft and it doesn’t cover the swath as well or make as tidy finish. We’re looking for a newer, wider machine that would cover 10ft rows comfortably. Would a bigger 6 rotor be good enough or would it be better to move to a smaller 8 rotor? I’ve also read of people having problems with the krone Tedder balling up grass? We’ve got on well with krone which would make me happy to have another one, but would be happy to explore the market into other brands.

Pottinger, Kuhn and krone were in our final 3.

Krone was dismissed on build quality and back up as issues with machine it was replacing .

Went with 8 star pottinger on build quailty that is far better spreading 3 rows far better than the 2 rows the 4 star krone had to deal with.
Smaller rotors get closer to the ground more evenly.

There is a useful diagram in the back of this document fhttps://www.krone-uk.com/english/products/rotary-tedders/kw-mounted-rotary-tedders/brochure-pdf/
to show which tedder matches each mower combination.

I too am considering upgrading the tedder. Was well set on a new malone a couple months ago. Enquired about a price in maybe Septemeber, then asked again this week to find the price up by 10% from all dealers. At nearly £10K for a new 6 rotor Malone, I'm now looking towards other brands. Pottinger and Claas are who I'm interested in.

Same thing happened me but fortunately only up £250, compared with the other brands i priced, i still found the Malone to be best value for money, especially taking into consideration how heavy it is, and 7 tine arms per rotor with most only having 6

Salesman I spoke to was telling me it's all coming from a new salesman at Malone. He usually orders a bulk stock order from them this time of year for the spring, but is refusing to now after the price rises- he thinks customers won't put up with a large price tag from a "small" brand compared to the brands who have been about for years. 100% agree.

I'd expect at least an 8 rotor for that money, even so when I bought my current 4 rotor new for not much over £4K. When will the price rises ever stop?

That’s a great help, thanks a lot. Has your pottinger done you well so far?

What size Tedder is it? Does it leave an even finish or does it become lumpy after tedding 2-4 times?

After evaluation questions about parts costs and capital outlay. I let my son to make the decison.
He did ask my opinion and i gave him the pros and cons of all the machines.

He decided on the pottenger from Mr Keitch.

Mainly for the back up and he liked the transport width.

Its an 8.81 6 rotor 5 arms per rotor.

No issue with lumps, we bale ourselves so if there was an issue it wouldn't be here!

This machine can keep up, and catch up with twin mowers....son says he wants triples, i say i enjoy the 5 minute snooze while waiting for him to open next field !!

Bought a two year old claas volto 80p this year replacing our worn out claas 770. Hated the previous one found it was shite and lumped grass and didnt pick grass up depending on if it was too dry or too damp.

This one is brilliant. Best tender I've seen and used. Picks up all the grass with no soil contamination (as long a s.d you spend 30 seconds setting it up in the first field) and spreads the grass really evenly with no clumping. Was an absolute dream to follow with the baler. Really really pleased with it.

I find I haven’t broken a tine this season, usually go through a few as some of our fields are questionable, I find it rides very well with hydraulic steering for the headlands. We found no gouge marks which I’d get with the standard straight tines. It spreads the grass very well, more so in thicker leys. Pitch of the machine as the grass dries is crucial for any machine though to avoid those sea waves across the field.

I’d PM @Martin Holden for your nearest dealer.

5.5m 555/4 spider is mine, they come in straight and hook tined spec, next size up is the 685 with hooked tines but the equipment across the range is very solid built and it’s competitive against other main liners, but they’ve 65 years of background in making grass equipment. The warranty is good too!

Excuse the top decoration as it was very dry hay, but it sweeps very well.
