I stripped this simplified map of Ukrainian soil types. The area marked in yellow as southern chernozem is pretty much now in russian control.

Yep, understand 80%+ is winter wheat.
Its the corn crop that gets planted mid March/April that is at risk.
It used to be said that if you want to know what the wheat price is going to be, take a look at Ukraine in the winter to see if it looks white.
If it has snowed, it will protect the wheat crop from the severe frosts in Winter.
If it doesn’t snow, their winter wheat will die and they have to replant in the spring, with lower yields.

Podcast I was listening to from a Scottish farmer in Ukraine said Russian troops were on farm and asking them to leave. Leave quietly and nobody will be hurt. This guy farmed 20000ha.

Is mad Vlad planning farming?

Mad bad Vlad said a few years ago that he planned to be the worlds largest organic farmer...helping oneself to Ukraine would help that ambition.

You know what shading does to plants?
You are talking theory.
In actual practice grass still grows under panels because its not full shade, not full production no, nor would your Italian ryegrass like it but it still grows grass which is grazed.

No shade isnt a problem but Dry is some small areas where diverted rain runs off the panels and also where sheep tracking wears down the cover.
overall its good sheep keep ,they like a bit of interest and cover sometimes, shade and a rub :sneaky:as well.
