Got fined £150 ( + 3 points) at a magistrates court for being “blue light aware” in my mirrors approaching traffic light controlled X roads with cameras and pedestrian fencing at kerb for the last 50 yards and no way to create space without going forwards.
Traffic lights turned to amber as I entered the area with no possibility of getting out of way onto kerb but saw blues in my mirrors so checked there was no forward hazard and made way for the Ambulance by going through on Red.
Future times in similar circumstances I have held up police cars, ambulances and fire engines by remaining for the green to appear.
I could have just agreed and paid the £30 or so and taken the points but I believed I was doing the right thing, never again.
Friend had same in Solihull, thus always been wary, on light controlled roundabout Police car on blues and twos tried to push me across roundabout on red light. Wmp called our fleet manager to speak to driver of the car, me, i explained law to the officer who called me he was furious as car was responding to an officer down. I asked if I had broken the law would Wmp have provided me with a statement to that effect in my defence, said I was being obtuse, told him to go do some law enforcement and not try and bully motorists who obeyed the law.

Sadly you were doing the right thing and I'd have done the same

Blue lights trained responders treat traffic lights as a give way . If the road is blocked they are specifically trained to silence the siren until the lights change and traffic starts to move. The aim is that no-one should feel "forced" to drive through amber or red lights no matter how well meaning

That said it's disgusting that an appeal or magistrate should not use some discretion and chuck it out

Bet it was some camera operator to$$er likely employed by the likes of Serco

Happens all the time. Part of the problem with alternating headlamp flashers and 200W yelpers is good folks like you do the right thing and early and other idiots do excatly that

I make it a rule wherever I can and as soon as I see a light to pull right over or ideally off. Passengers always take the pee for "going overboard" and "too early" but what I've found is that responder nearly always needs sufficient space creation for the last minute ditherers.

The times I've stopped on an open stretch of road and even flashed forward the oncoming responder to say I've seen them and also a hint to the numpty oncoming also that hasn't and then they freeze right opposite my stopped vehicle; ear pods, drugs, no roadcraft training, radio on full bore, chatting to other passengers / kids I guess the list is endless but in the end we're just making allowances for poor driving skills and observation

Many a time a driver instructor covered the rear view mirror and asked for the colour of the three or four vehicles following me.

Having watched the police on the TV 'motorway cops' some of their actions leave a lot to be desired at times, at junctions in a town/city copper screaming 'get out the way', poor bugger in front can only see lots of flashing blue lights and headlights and is supposed to guess if the police car wants to go straight forward, turn left or right.

Friend of Mrs N got crippled for life by an ambulance going through a red light at speed.

Very nearly had a collision with an ambulance last month, his indicator was almost invisible against the flashing headlights and blue lights. Looked as though he intended to go straight on but wanted to turn right.

Cars with day time running LEDs turn the light off on the side the indicator's working so it shows up better surely the same could be done with the blue lights

Did you have a wagon right in behind you then eventually pull into a lay-by ? Not my neck of the woods but it was a good way past Morton heading north ish
Only joking, I was going southbound through moreton on 1494 at full throttle, must have been doing at least 20mph, after pulling into layby after moreton made about 50yds before line of mercs and range rovers were stacked up behind me with no pulling in places for 3 miles, up hill and down dale🙄
