The annoying thing about these calf market reports is they don't give you weights or ages . Are the ones making £500 3 weeks old or 3 months old?
Let's hope 3 weeks

Some vendors prefer to sell small stirks through the calf ring, as there’s no weightsYou have to be there, some should be in the stirk ring
Hell of a trade, i was posting prices from the midlands. As i said above i didnt see you were based in cumbria which explains the high prices achieved. Weaned black and whites at £230 look cheap

After or before stoppages? Our blues averaged £401 this year,(45bulls and 50 heifers)30 to 40 days old ,reared on high scc/old cows. Some in sedgemoor this week £770 , but were 16 week old and looked like they were from sucklers.
You'll be where I said. Your calves are top draw beasts
Putting 12 blues a month through buitelaar at the minute around 21 days old, bulls av £360/380 heifers av £300/320.Average weight circa 60/65kg
Get em to 35 days and you'll put £50/head on
Whitland this week, top bull calf £510 top hfr £430. Average on the day for both was £203!! Just shows there wasnt many anywhere nr the top price and thats the same around all the markets. Top prices are great and the calves must of been a credit to the vendors, but averages paint the true picture of tradesalways take reports with a pinch of salt unless you actually see the stuff go through the ring
I know nothing of that market but there are still loads of poor calves in market that struggle to get a bid there all in the average.I'm starting to think it's Whitland that need to up their game rather that everyone else take a bath.
There's examples posted from each end of the country now in excess of that.

Most big calve markets midlands/wales would be just the same with averages being half the top prices. These markets are selling 300-600 weekly so could be the numbers not the calves. I am amazed exeter/devon/somerset areas would be getting prices posted as there would be alot more grass rat calves/herds and farmers flock from our area down there to buy cheaper stores than they can buy hereI'm starting to think it's Whitland that need to up their game rather that everyone else take a bath.
