But lose any quality control of how the dairy farm have looked adter the calfs for the 1st few days. If these "integrated" companies are doing their job they will soon discover from the grouth data the dairy farms they should drop.
Or send you the calves off the bad farms once they think they got control over you.

I've known people try to get involved with this in the region, all came away thinking they were getting the raw end of the deal. If you were to enter into any arrangement make it one where you just get paid to do the work and they handle the risk and capital outlay. I could see how B and B type arrangement where they pay you a salary whilst you do a modest amount of work each day and go off tractor driving or whatever would work ok.

Friend got some calves from a well known enterprise. Lst nearly 10% to coccidiosis whixh he was deemed to have "bought".

After 2 years the first few have gone and he's getting around £700 to £800 per head.

Does some one mind telling me the basic finances of b and b pigs? Something I've always been interested in, just curious really as what sort of income is to be made by it. Thanks

My very limited understanding of b and b pigs is that disposal of the slurry is a significant factor in how well it works for some farms.

Sure.
I do BnB pigs . You need 9 sq ft per pig for weaners ( what I do ) , or 18 for fattening pigs. provide the shed , the feeders ,the straw, water and labour .
They provide the pigs, the feed, and any medicine they may need. A rep for the company will appear once or twice a week to check up on them . Pigs arrive at 27 days old , and leave at 9 weeks. 5 shifts a year . I get £4 / pig when they leave . Cash flow , and plenty of good muck for the farm . Suits me fine !

How much straw do they use? £4 doesn't sound very much if straw is £100t.

Sounds good, do you know roughly how long it would take to pay back a slatted pig shed if one was built specially for b and b pigs?
