when I was in Australia in 1987 the farmers in south Australia were starting to put some nitrogen fertiliser as dap on their wheat to boost protein levels as 70 years of crop growing had depleated the soil available nitrogen resulting in lower protein levels in the wheat producedOff on a tangent... but how do you get most of your wheat to high enough proteins? We don't intentionally grow for milling here as there is a good feed market around us, I do grow 2 milling varieties at present as their yield and disease packages are currently as good if not better than the feed varieties, but my grain is well below spec on our required protein levels for milling. Do you have to throw significant amount of late Nitrogen at the crop or are the protein levels naturally higher due to variety, lower yields and climatic factors?
you canot take from the soil for ever ventually you have to return some nutrients
