I find him to be quite on the ball with most things political, even if his ideals and mine dont always match, unles my ideals aren't what I think they are!
Ditto, I'm on the political right but have been watching him for years, he is a bright guy, very funny and - as is a good friend of mine - proper Labour, not a trendier-than-thou snowflake type. He is absolutely spot on in his criticisms of Left, Right and Centre political types, and he has some principles too, most obviously free speech for all. Crazy that he gets abused as a Nazi etc. by the 'woke' mob for saying that people he disagrees with should have the right to say what they think too.

We need a few more like him, there are a couple on the Right, but a lot of the Left in comedy are running scared of speaking out like he does. His two Brexit podcasts - longer than his usual ones - were brilliantly done, to the final word.

I always think, with things like this, I pay far more attention if there is t the swearing. Maybe just me?

I assume your joking but just in case.
I’m not sensitive to it at all, it just gets in my head thinking “why is this guy needing to swear” I then find I’m not actually hearing what he’s saying.
The exception, because they did it so well was “feck” in Father Ted (y)

Oh, and didn’t students always “know it all”?
I’ll bet you did

No I don't have any idea what it was like, but doubt that what black people are 'suffering' in the UK today is anything like comparable.
As you say if you keep your head down and get on with life, trouble rarely comes your way.
I have a Russian friend who is gay, and a few years ago when Putin was having a go at gay demonstrators, I asked him what he thought about the oppression. He seemed to be more pragmatic than many folks here as he told me he didn't simply see himself as gay, he was primarily a Russian, and he believed Putin on balance was the best option for the country, his family, and so on, so he supported him in spite of his intolerence of gay people. He said that there were plenty of gay people in Russia but no one bothered you if you didn't cause trouble and turn it into an issue. I found this attitude interesting as we tend to see people as one dimensional and define each other as gay, black, gammon, etc, and we are really much more interesting than that.

I'd overlooked the second bit of your post, until now...

Hmm... I properly started University when I was 26, so I probably seemed a geriatric to most of them. On the plus side, I had my own house, car and money... and had actually done something before I got there, so I had plenty of fun until I got hitched.

As for knowing it all, age teaches most that they know very little, and studying any subject - all I am aware of anyway - reveals such a vast amount of information about and sub-divisions within it that it is immediately obvious how little one can know, even after years of proper study.

But, that aside, I was more outspoken than most undergraduates when I though a lecturer wasn't doing their job properly, be it in supplying materials or supervision of whatever. But I think the confidence of more years and time in the Army were more of an influence on that than my own character, I write that because there were a few other 'mature' students who were similarly minded, despite very differing personalities, experience and characters.

When I entered university at the age of eighteen in the early sixths there were a few undergrads who had done national service. They were from a different generation it seemed to us but they had a stabilising influence. During the mid sixties Iife certainly became more lighthearted but the left wing lunatic fringe took over. In rural Kent it was not a problem but my brother in law at the London School of economics baled out after a year. It was certainly a time of change but not for the better upon reflection.

I am surprised Ashy hasn’t mentioned Sean Russell. :cautious:

Oh, I never heard of this individual to be honest. But personally I wouldn’t pee on either an IRA man or a Sinn Feiner, if they were on fire. They don’t represent me. I’d also support blowing up this Russel chaps statue. Our fabled city of Dublin deserves better.
From your own perspective however, I’d be far more concerned about Nazi sympathisers right in the heart of the British establishment. Windsor Castle no less.
Just watched a snippet on the RTE news now. Today is the 70th anniversary of a fatal crash of an RAF plane on a small island off the Mayo coast ROI. Achill Island. Lost in heavy fog, it crashed into Croghan Mountain. Eight souls were lost.
Locals carried the bodies down from the mountain to Irish army vehicles, which then transported them to the border where NI authorities took over.
As the cortège prepared to leave Achill, over 5,000 local people lined the route, bared their heads and said a prayer. That’s the spirit of the Irish people. The opposite of that of the aforementioned Seán Russell.

I was reading a book about the wartime RAF recently, I think it was the one about the test pilot Winkle Brown, and they had to go to Eire to recover an RAF plane that had forced landed and was being held at an Air Corps field. They were allowed to recover it on condition that they did not wear their RAF uniforms but one officer decided to big it up and go in full dress, so their reception was hostile to say the least and looked like causing an incident. However, the others told him to stop being a prat, so he changed into civvies and the whole mood changed leading to a very friendly p+++-up before they set off for home.
