Well what would you buy on a budget (say 8k) to sow max 200 acres per year. 140hp tractor available with front pto and linkage. 4 furrow reversible Plough already here and set of simba 2b heavy discs and have my own sprayer. Land is heavy clay. No black grass to worry about or cfsb yet. So thinking mostly winter crops of wheat, osr and beans. And get established early.
24m tramlines.
Contractor sowed with power harrow one pass with disc coulters. Which I think does a good job when conditions are tricky.
Open to all ideas. Smaller the capital investment the better. As also need to buy a set of rolls.

Hangon the right answer is just get a contractor in for a couple of seasons & see how that fits into your budget.

a classic Kuhn/Accord Combi suffolk coulters not the best in the heavier clay but we used such a drill for 19years.
So cheap to run.
If buying used. Spend a little more on better coulters. The Suffolk coulter was bad In it’s day ( I ran a lely for four years) and it’s even worse by today’a standards!

Nowt wrong with Suffolk coulters. Yes they won’t punch a slot in the ground like a vaddy will but there better than a lot of poorly sprung disc combis that ride over stuff!
We don’t sell poorly sprung disc coulters . Our Suffolk’s has 20kg downforce, our twin disc has 50kg down force our best seller has 100kg down force

Plenty of good crops put in with 3m kuhn accords on Suffolk coulters, yes modern disc coulters may be better but they are more expensive and the drills tend to be a lot heavier, all weight pounding the land down.
Aye dont i know it, i have same Kuhn combi i listed fs at Agrilinc there & full set of sowing discs,hubs/bearings the lot & all hinge bushes etc etc pretty much £2,400 for the parts & add in the Hanging Pins ive also changed thats another £350, it had done 4500 odd acres & some discs wernt totally gone but its all as new now again.

I was thinking of asking the same question.
200acres; 130/140hp available (no front linkage); £8k budget; ww, barley and beans.
18m tramlines.

We currently plough, work down then drill with 6m vicon lz. My thinking was to spend less time on the whole job (200 acres unfortunately isnt a great payer) so move away from the plough. Maybe a tine drill - simple, quick, low maintenance
