'Chisum' is a great film! There's another film where they send cattle through a barricade, forget which one, 'Tell 'em we're coming in, Texas style!' YEEEHAA!!
I was reared in the likes of “Chisum”! My mums a major John Wayne fan!! Proper films! The Cowboys was another droving one! I wasn’t very old when mum told the that Bruce Dern was a b@stard. 😂😂😂😂

There was a landowner who'd spent time cattle farming in Australia who'd drive a large number of cattle from North Devon to North Cornwall once a year, with him and the drovers on horses. Mum said it was quite a sight when she was a girl.

Only just seen this thread .
Up to 15 years ago my neigbour down in the vale had around 300 sucklers and three hill farms rented up on Exmoor . ( NW if locals are wondering) I use to work for him as a S Employed tractor driver and stock man and apart from 50 Galloway s, everything was calved next door and we use to walk bunches of 50 cows and calfs upto the hill farms but in the autumn walk back 100 -120 cows in a batch back to vale . It was a combo of back roads , moorland and B roads including hamlets . Simonsbath back to Luccombe would be the longest trip, around 12 miles but also 4 mile trips between farms often through the year . Would be around 6 of us and used quads , 2 wheel motor bikes to get people back in front again . Was a fair old sight and people generally were ok . Can t think of any major problems , odd wing mirror knocked off , s..t on cars and a few animals temporary in a garden .

Have u ever read the reclamation of exmoor forest?

In my travels I used to see the odd herd still going up the road or crossing the road in Somerset. Heck the farm where I spent some of my youth used to do it a fair bit. Open the gate, bit of bailer twine and the older cows knew where to go. Rare to have any issues.

Years ago when I was at college the cows still crossed the road. I was there one day stood in the road making sure they got across (pretty nasty main road and fast as most Devonians will tell you) and a lady stepped out of her car and took a photo of us all. My one chance of fame, blown it. Although it could have been my fancy Case IH overalls.

Ramblings on radio this morning was on a drovers road from West Wales to London, they used Corgi dogs, when they got to the end of their stretch the men would have to hang around for up to a week to get their money but they would send the dogs off back home on their own, to stop at inns on the way for doggy b and b, the men then settling up with the inn keepers days later. Cattle would often stray off the track and be lost in the bog, was rather hoping Ms Balding would give a demonstration but sadly no.

You ought to do a serious YouTube channel, you farm in a picturesque place, get the junior farm hand labour on the job with a drone. Don't need a camera in your face to make the views.

Junior farm hand at uni now so not around as much.

Somehow I’ve got nearly 2k followers on YouTube. Not sure how they find me.
