How would short discs go on straight in to pp? How many passes would it take in the right conditions to get a bed for re seed.

I do three passes for chucking rape/stubble turnips . That wouldn't be good enough to put back in grass. After it's been grazed it will do it fine because the turf will have broken down

I’ve been able to do it with 3 passes going different directions each time but it’s a very bumpy ride. Got the contractor coming this time with rotovator as I feel it does a better job and breaks it up more

Ah fair enough, so £24 an acre is roughly about right?
I’d say it would be quite steep. Been out with ours this morning 200hp on 6 meter set. Averaging about 13ac/hr (in 6 and 12 ac fields) At £24/ac that would be £312/hr. don’t think anyone would pay that? I’m guessing you would not be going very deep at the moment with the ground been so dry, won’t take much pulling.

Surely it's not your problem if you work quicker than they thought you would. Do people charge the same per hour for using a forty foot combine compared to a ten? If someone.came.to do yours with a three metre behind an 80 hp tractor and charged by the hour you'd be a bit narked

I agree. I’m just trying to give the OP an example of how to work the price out so he and the person he is working for are both happy, better of charging a sensible rate and getting more work in the future than charging a daft rate and never getting asked again. If he charges £24/ac and goes with a 3 meter set and 100hp tractor does 7ac/hr that’s £168/hour. Would you pay £168/hr for a man to come with a 100 hp tractor and a set of light discs.
I think the price quoted by the naac is for heavy offset discing. If you are only going an inch or so deep I’d use the spring tine or pressing price £18 to £20/ac. But the OP has not said how deep he is going to go or the amount of acres he has to cover.

It’s better to charge enough to cover your costs and make a profit!
It’s no use doing it too cheap just to get asked to do it again as you may as well leave the machine in the shed.

200hp tractor - £150k +
Disks £15-20k +
30-40l/h in fuel - £35 - £45
labour - £15-20h

It all adds up! The days of £18/ac for disc cultivation are long gone my friend.

This is three passes in a field not ploughed for 25 years Not good enough for grass in my opinion. Too many little clods about

There is a big difference between pulling a set of short discs over some stubble at 2inch deep and discing 6inch deep with a set of simba 2b’s. There has to be a price difference between the two.
