Have solved the mystery as to why Warham Camp is such a mess: Jake Fiennes doesn't know his arse from his elbow.
In his modestly titled book 'Land Healer' he devotes two whole chapters to why we need less livestock if we are to save the planet. He shows an alarming naivety on the interaction between how we farm and the requirements of the human diet, talking endlessly about calories as if this is the only criteria by which we should measure productivity. He repeatedly quotes from anti-livestock bodies such as the National Food Strategy and the NFU, without showing any sign that he may have thought this stuff through for himself.
This matters. Fiennes hints at how he gave the now King a guided tour of Holkham. No doubt many others beat a path to his door to learn how we need to stop our food and farming system being so destructive. Folks like Jake Fiennes need the decision makers to believe that there is much wrong our side of the farm gate, because otherwise they are out of a job.
I would hope that where ELMS money ends up is open to public inspection in the same way as is the BPS. @Janet Hughes Defra has told us that a key aim of ELMS is to redress the fact that 50% of BPS goes to 10% of farmers. From where things are at, I see Jake and co hoovering it all up. Time will tell.
