I’d ring them and offer to pay half of the bill bit of a pee take going 40 mile on it just my opinion, at least help with the cost of going to lift it with a wagon that seems fair doesn’t it?
I know you say you were intending to buy it if it was suitable but way to many take the Micky and demo stuff they have no intention of ever buying
If they left it there for 4 days they must have expected him to use it, what’s the difference in doing 10 loads 4 miles away or 1 load 40 miles away.

With so many farmers taking the “Pee” outa dealers with loan and demo tractors I couldn’t blame any dealer to charge “BUT” it needed saying before the key was turned and definitely not afterwards.
If a machine is purchased then I would think the bill should happily be binned.
I can see both sides after talking to a local rep who was complaining about a customer he had brought machines in to demo from hundreds of miles away and customer then purchased elsewhere but the dealership had put thousands of pounds to those demos as all transport costs and demo drivers and washing equipment etc were paid by the dealership.
Some farmers ruin demos for others as they have no intention of purchasing or funds to do so but try anything.

Ordinarily if this happened in a large franchise it would be one of those things and you wouldn't have a bill to pay. However this is a one man band, I don't suppose there is much margin for him to loan a tractor, fetch it from wherever, repair it, which may involve a main dealer and not an in-house repair.

I think a fair result would be to pay half and think yourself lucky to have not bought it.

Or you play hardball if your that way inclined.

I’d talk to the dealer about it for starters pointing out it was a demo and he agreed that it was ok to collect the straw from a distance away . If things go pear shaped pay what you think it’s worth ie the correct hire charge and deduct the price of the extra diesel and left in it . He can’t chase you for an unpaid bill then .

If you have a written conversation with the dealer about the work you were planning on doing on the demo prior to picking up the tractor then it's fair game, and ask him which orifice he would like the bill returned to.

These are what demos are for when thinking of purchasing a second hand tractor, especially with the prices tractors are commanding these days. Better it goes bang on the demo than 3-4 months after signing on the dotted line.......?

But (and I'm not intentionally contradicting myself) If he's a tidy chap that has good stock of implements on the yard then maybe offer half of the bill with the diesel as a sign of good will? After all it could happen to anyone.

160 miles for two loads of straw! Perhaps you should consider finding a merchant closer to home! NH a notoriously hard on their brakes. 🤐

I got a tractor on Demo sadly for the dealership it came during a busy week it done over 90hours before they picked it up

there was no mention of a bill and I didn’t even buy one of that brand as it went down to money in the end and they didn’t value my old Valtra as a lot

but if it broke 40 mile away I would ofshoved It on a low loader and brought it back atleast
